What foods taste different to you?

Recommended Posts

I was warned about food tasting different post-op but I did not expect flavors to change so much!

I'm 41 days out & I ate teriyaki chicken from one of my favorite spots. I snuck a piece of orange chicken & suddenly did NOT like it. it tasted too sweet! Also Kraft cheese slices. I grabbed half a slice to to pair with some chicken & it tasted SO weird. I know it was never good cheese but it tasted worse than usual lol. Things in general just taste sweeter & stronger.

What about you guys? Also are these taste changes permanent for you?

The change in our taste buds, & sometimes our sense of smell too, is just temporary. The flavour, texture or smell of some foods almost turn your tummy or taste disgusting.

While being extra sensitive to sweetness is pretty common, other flavours, textures & smells can be individual. I remember the first time I was able to eat vegetables as a side & sat down to my favourite asparagus & sugar snap peas & blah!! Just awful. Took a couple of weeks before I could eat them. Strangest one was smoked salmon. I often found it too rich pre surgery but suddenly I could eat it & had it every second day with cucumber & a little cream cheese. Then one day nope, couldn’t stomach it & haven’t been able to face it since.

PS - Personally, I embraced the sensitivity to sweet & never really reintroduced sugar, sugar alternatives or sweeteners back into my eating.

things didn't really taste different for me, but my sense of taste intensified for awhile. Sweet things tasted sweeter; spicy things tasted spicier. I don't notice it anymore - not sure if it was temporary or if I just got used to it.

So many things taste different to me. I used to love eggs, now I can't eat them more than once in a month or so. My nose is very sensitive, so things just smell so bad to me.

I have had lifelong taste issues and was surprised that a bunch of them got better post surgery:

  • I went from exclusively drinking Water my entire life to not being able to make myself drink it at all. I only drink tea or diluted apple juice now. Water didn't used to have a "taste" but now it's gross.
  • I only used to eat salt and butter. No pepper, or any other spices. I now love spices (not talking about spicy food), and overseason everything with black pepper, mustard, garlic, etc.
  • I can now eat onions and mushrooms. I love them. Previously I would gag and couldn't eat them.
  • After a few months of thinking everything was too sweet, I'm back to where I was before surgery and enjoy them again. Oops!

I don't get it really but I appreciate being able to eat more foods without gagging.

Things seem to taste sweeter. I never had a sweet tooth but now when I eat things savory that has a smidge of sweetness, like sauces, it's a ugh. It's amplified.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
