your new stomach is not big enough to cope with this any more and if you do eat and drink together, you may vomit. Can also lead to dumping syndrome

if you had bypass, it's because your pyloric valve has been bypassed, and you just have a stoma now (a small hole where digested food goes directly into the small intestine). If you drink Water too soon after eating, the food gets washed from your stomach too quickly.

  1. There is not enough room for both food and Water in your new pouch.
  2. Water will flush the food out of your pouch quickly. This means a couple of things.
    1. You may get dumping syndrome.
    2. Your pouch won't be able to send the signal to your brain that you're full. So, you'll get hungry again sooner and/or you will need to eat a larger amount to be satisfied.
  3. The food needs to sit in your pouch for as long as possible, for digestion - so you can absorb as many of the nutrients as possible.

I am copying my post from another thread.... I am pre-op and one of the most concerning restrictions of VSG for me is the 30 minute before and after rule of drink/eat. I have always been a constant sipper and my husband & I have a lot of "wine & dine" business/social engagements. I had assumed the drink/eat rule was due to filling up in liquid and then not having room for food.....wrong. After researching the mechanics behind this rule, I discovered the reason why. The video below shows how we can easily sabotage ourselves by breaking the rule! https://youtube.com/shorts/oNdeGkkwqlw?feature=share
