I have recently been diagnosed with secondary hyperparathyroidism and wanted to know if I should see a endocrinologist? I have recently contacted PacificLap to do a consult about this. I have joined the DS forum also I do have dental issues of osteoporiasis, , autoimmune issues (some may not be related to DS surgery) I am a retired RNMS and enjoy gardening, dogs, birding , book clubs, anything science, and nature 1 KimA-GA reacted to this
catwoman7 11,220 Posted October 24, 2022 an endocrinologist would be more of a specialist in that area, but depending on your insurance company, you may have to get a referral from a PCP first. re: osteoporiasis - is that the same as osteoporosis? If so, that's another area that some endocrinologists specialize in. I see an endocrinologist about my osteoporosis (which may or may not have been related to my RNY - it runs rampant among women on both sides of my family, plus I'm over 60 years old to boot). 3 Tomo, KimA-GA and Arabesque reacted to this

RickM 1,752 Posted October 27, 2022 It does sound like an endocrinologist is the place to go. A few years ago in the Rabkin/Keshishian group in Ventura there was some discussion about such things and there was an endo down there who was DS knowledgeable that several patients had seen. There was a discussion about osteoporosis, Calcium, etc. a couple of weeks ago on Rabkin's monthly Zoom meeting, so that would also be a place to check out to get some general knowledge on these topics, and certainly a consult with the doc can zero in on specifics. From your other thread, it does seem like Prolia is the treatment of choice today - my wife (DS class of 2005) is on that and it seems to help.
jvktt64@gmail.com 1 Posted October 27, 2022 Thank you for your suggestion. I have names of several endocrinologists. Issue is many are booked way ahead. I am having symptoms I am concerned about and hope I can get in to one that is a good one. So many are not good Do you know anyone that has Secondary hyperparathyroidism? I had the DS which is worse for issues I think. Especially since it is so long ago. My fatique and mental issues with it are concerning, and I have recently had huge stressor with my husband having heart bypass and aortic valve surgery October 3 and he just got transferred to cardiac rehab. He had serious issues post surgery and I had a hard time not internalizing all the pain , confusion, etc he has had. Thanks Jackie
