11 Days Post-Op and everything makes me sick… shakes included

Recommended Posts

Hi! I’m just wondering if anyone has struggled the way I am. I had surgery October 12. I’ve not been able to stomach anything but Water since. I tried choking down Protein Shakes, tried Protein waters, Protein Shots. I’m now supposed to be eating six small meals per day, which can be yogurt, pudding, blended cottage cheese, or cream Soups. I can’t even finish one and I’m sick for the rest of the day.

Last week I saw my surgeon and was told I have thrush, post nasal drip, and was dehydrated. Was given mucinex d, diflucan, and sent to the hospital for fluids. I felt better but still unable to eat anything. Phenergan and zofran are not helping me.

I’m so frustrated at this point. There have been many tears shed. I’m so sick of feeling sick. I keep telling myself this will pass and the surgery will be worth it, but I feel like I’ve ruined my stomach and will never feel good again.

Sorry you are struggling.

A lot of people struggle early out, and they say it gets better. It will get better.

Based on your post, it seems your surgeon disregarded you not being able to eat due to all the other concerns they found. Maybe you should revisit that with your surgeon, even with a phone call.

Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon.

Yea if you saw your surgeon last week and you are still feeling the same way I would think it’s worth another phone call (maybe even another appointment) If you still aren’t eating literally anything at some point you may need supplemental nutrition. I didn’t experience it personally but have seen people on here who have really struggled in the beginning but they DID get through it and you will too with the help of your team. I would definitely stay in contact with your team and when you do talk to them ask them lots of questions such as what to expect. At what point should you call again if you still aren’t eating. Is there anything else to watch for. Are you getting all your fluids at least? There are a few different nausea meds so maybe they can try another one of those.

Hi- I had it too, and one of the meds was promethazine, 25 mg. Don't suffer. Tell them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
