IV iron infusion?

Recommended Posts

Hello, i am almost one yr post op. I had my RNY 11/1/2021, down 142lbs and require Iron IV infusion. I am waiting for the insurance approval to get scheduled. Has anyone else done this and how did you feel afterwards? Did you still have to continue taking mutivitamins with iron? I do feel without energy and thought i was doing fine, till my bloodwork never got better

I have to do IV Iron infusions because I can't take iron pills. I found that it did help with my energy and at the time my hair was actually falling out a bit, so the infusions help (this was before bariatric surgery).

I can't imagine you should be taking a Multivitamin with iron if you are getting iron infusions, but that's something to ask your doctor.

Not personally but a young colleague had a series of Iron transfusions. I recall her saying she would be exhausted for a day or so after. Best would be to ask your doctor about what to expect or watch for after the infusion. I would question you needing to take iron tablets after because the infusion should boost your levels back to an acceptable range but again ask because your needs may be different.

Have they investigated if there is any reason for your iron levels to be so low? I know they were initially concerned my colleague had internal bleeding but tests showed she didn’t. Hers turned out to be a genetic issue as her sister & her mother were found to be very low in iron too.

Hiiiiii..so I’ve been anemic all my life..it got worst after surgery. I was so close to getting iv infusions but I found out doing my own research that ferrous sulfate does not work for me, I couldn’t tolerate it at all so I switched myself to ferrous gluconate 2 tabs 3 times a day for a month..I was scheduled for iv infusion towards the end of the month but it was cancelled since It was climbing back up. I also added a liquid iron my grandma recommended. And now everything is a okay. I heard the iv infusions are good and they get your levels up but u still have to maintain them. Good luck and I hope u find something that works

I would actually think you would want to take the Vitamin with Iron to keep your levels up going forward so definitely ask you Dr on this one. Seems to me like if it’s low enough you need infusions that That taking both wouldn’t matter and the idea would be to get them back to baseline and hopefully discontinue infusions but of course I have no medical training so please ask. If you have been taking the vitamin all along and it’s still low it’s possible your body just can’t absorb it that way anyways.
