Good morning!

I am still early in my pre-op journey. I have had my meeting with the nutritionist and surgeon but now waiting for my evaluaion with the psychologist. I guess my question is, what are they looking for primarily? I don't have bulimia or any other eating disorder. Is this what they are looking for?

Just had mine. I was interviewed for about half an hour about why I wanted the surgery, eating and weight background, etc. Then, I was given questionnaires and tested on anxiety, depression, eating behaviors, etc. I was given results at the end.

There's actually a whole host of things they look at, but I think it can be summed up by saying they are evaluating if you are ready for bariatric surgery.

They look to see if you have a history or tendency toward addictive behavior, if you are a suicide risk, if they think you will be able to be compliant with your program, if you actually mentally understand what's being proposed and why, if you have any other mental disorders that might cause issues, etc.

it’s normal to be nervous!!

mine was seeing if I was mentally stable enough to safely complete the pre and post requirements.

If i had any substance abuse issues or uncontrolled eating disorder (especially emotional eating and binge eating) issues that would be an encumbrance to a successful surgery.

And did I fully understand the life changing decision and possible ramifications of surgery on my life.

really it wasn’t that bad - mine was concerned about alcohol because of my family history of alcohol abuse which I am very very aware of but otherwise thought I had things in control enough for surgery (i have depression anxiety and other lovey things currently controlled)

make sure to tell us how it goes!

Gosh i remember mine. I was nervous but it was so stupid. Mine was in two appointments. 1 was with the psychologist for an hour basically talking about food, How i handle it, how much i eat, and eating habits. Basically asking if i eat say cheeze its. Do i take the whole box with me or do i pour some out in a cup and leave the box... Then the 2nd was a 600 question test on a computer asking general questions on certain things Making sure you are not depressed or suicidal. They asked the same question tons of times but worded it different each time.

Mine was a joke. I was there like ten minutes. He asked me about my bipolar and who was treating me and from there I get the feeling he felt like he was sorta off the hook. I donT even think he went over what I expected from surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
