Spices (not heat) post op

Recommended Posts

post op, was there any issues with tolerating spices? not heat/capsaicin (that’s obvious to me as a no eat for a while, but not my favorite thing to eat anyway) but flavorful spices like cumin, paprika, bay leaves, dried herbs, fresh herbs, ginger, cinnamon etc etc etc that add bursts of flavor, especially savory, to things?

did you have any issues with spices in particular?

were you told to avoid black pepper?

thank you!

None here at all, including spicy heat.

My wife and I really love flavorful dishes, so we cook a lot of Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, Peruvian, etc. dishes and I've had no issues with anything so far.

We eat a lot of Thai and Chinese foods that I cook to our tastes. I haven't had a problem with those foods. I never had anybody from my team say that I couldn't have spice in my life. I cannot have the noodles or rice yet. I cannot tolerate them.

No with spices for me either, heat or otherwise.

BUT…i did notice after surgery that my spicy heat tolerance has lowered considerably. I was a suicide-wings level kinda gal before surgery, now not so much. Doesn’t stop me from trying though!

my sense of taste intensified for awhile after surgery - sweet things tasted sweeter, spicy things tasted spicier. I haven't noticed that in a long time, though - not sure if it went away or if I just got used to it. But to answer your question, I don't remember being bothered by non-hot spices, like cinnamon. It was more the hot ones. Like hot peppers in various Asian dishes. I can eat them again now, but for a few weeks or months, they were too hot for me.

I eat a ton of spicy things. I even eat ghost pepper beef sticks. I eat Thai chili peppers (the small red and green ones) with most of my meat dishes. No issue with heat whatsoever. No diet restrictions from my surgeon in regards to spicy things either.

No issues here either, with spices or heat.

I do however agree with @ms.sss I have less of a tolerance for the heat. haha I feel like basic hot sauce is hot now, whereas before I would use the extra hot stuff you can't even buy from the grocery store.

Oh interesting topic! I have no issues with spices or heat at all - thankfully, also a heat lover here! For some reason I really expected to though. :337_fire:

In the first month or so, I experienced this too but it went back to normal in the later months (thank goodness).

I don’t eat chilli anyway as I have a sensitivity & it always stirred up my reflux & stomach acid something awful. I wasn’t told to avoid any herbs or spices & I remember adding garlic, ginger, parsley, chives & basil from soft foods. (Didn’t use fresh or dried at first but the purée versions.) Check with your dietician & then try to see how you go. You may not tolerate something at first but it may be fine later on.

Same here, I have never been a "salt" person. I only put it on french fries and never even cook with it.

Now I am trying to find salty things to eat, and add salt to things if I can.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
