Should I do breast reduction before or after Lap-Band sugery?

Recommended Posts

All,

I'm not certain what to do, so I figured I'd check with folks who've been there. I've been approved for breast reduction already and I'm going in for my first appt. with surgeon/dietician this week to discuss lapband surgery. I've completed a bunch of pre-paperwork (paperwork they review even before they'll consider you for an appt.), so I've passed the first step. My breast reduction approval is good until the end of March '08. I know that there's awhile to wait before you can get your lapband surgery, if approved for it. My concern is if I have the breast reduction before the lapband will they turn me away for the lapband? I have upper back problems and, gosh, if breast could be donor organs I'd have signed up long time ago!!!! My plastic surgeon said that they only drawback he could think is that they may become smaller than I'd like (no problem to me!!!). I just want to make sure that (a). I don't blow my chance for lapband surgery AND (:). my boobs don't end up sagging if I have it done beforehand.

I don't want to wait until after lapband surgery to have my reduction if I don't have to. Any suggestions????? :help:

I think two big factors would be what type of breasts you have and how much weight you have to lose.

Do you have a lot of weight to lose? If so, your breasts could go through some MAJOR changes. (like mine have - lol)

Are they big, round, & firm and you just want them smaller or are they just large and already sagging?

I would be inclined to say wait.

(you might want to post this in the PS Forum)

I would wait. When you lose weight in the bust area it can create additional sagging. I would wait until you are 10 lbs to goal. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I would wait till you are at goal. But that is just my opinion. I have seen the difference 5 or 10lbs can make closer to goal, and I would be pretty pissed if I had gone to the effort of a breast reduction and ended up with saggy breasts again because I couldn't wait.

Good question!

I am currently an H cup and desperately want BRS, however I will wait unit AFTER banding to do it. My mother had BRS done when she was young and then lost a bunch of weight, and she ended up with A cups, which is not what she wanted.

I would like to be a full C, but will wait and see what my breasts do after weightloss.

Good luck with your decision!

I have about 88 - 93 pounds to lose. I'm, at the least, a DDD.....swigging low~w~w!!! I have upper back problems also. "High Beam Headlights" would be awesome. I'm tired of walking around with poor posture because of them.....they get in the way! Also, I'm wondering if the insurance would still pay to have it done once I have the lapband & lose weight. They may not consider it "medically necessary" then. Decisions.....decisions......

O2B,

I love your comment about boobs being donor organs! I only wish! I am also at least a DDD. Since my surgery on Nov. 2, 2007 I have lost about 35 pounds and went from a 44 to 40 bra band size, but cup size has not changed. I hope to have reduction surgery after I meet my WL goal, but only if insurance pays most of it - no way I could do private pay. My sister had it done a year ago - I'm so jealous!

"Hang" in there and try not to trip!

Robin

Don't know but your surgeon should...breast surgeon that is.

FYI...my sister lost all her breast tissue due to weightloss and is having augmentation this week. No, she's not even an A cup... that's why she's having it done.

I had my reduction back in 1998 six months after i had my daughter. the doctor took 7.5 pounds off. i was so thrilled. i felt so much better.

fast forward 9 years later, i had the lapband done on 12/3 and i have lost 20 pounds. yes, my boobs are getting smaller but after years of having back pain, etc, i am glad i had my reduction surgery. if i go down to an A, well, there is always surgery to blow them back up! LOL!

again, it is your decision. it does depend on how much you need to loose in general and loose in the boobs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
