When did your program give you the OK to take vitamins?

Recommended Posts

My program says to start taking Vitamins on day 5 post-op (today for me!) But I'm feeling a little nervous. I have the Bariatric Advantage strawberry watermelon chewy bites and I'm worried I'll end up nauseous after taking one. I'm feeling pretty good today and don't want to anger the new stomach 😂 I understand everyone has a different plan and timeline but I'm curious when you were allowed to take vitamins? And how did your stomach handle them starting off?

I started taking them as soon as I got home from the hospital. The only one that bothered my stomach was my Vitamin B complex capsule, but that was just temporary. A week or two later I was able to tolerate them.

I started taking my chewable vitamins as soon as I got home from the hospital. First time I took one I got so sick and soon learned to take them after I eat. To this day I cannot tolerate taking them on an empty stomach.

Well. I had pre op blood work about 3 months prior to surgery, after the blood draw, I was told to begin Bariatric Fusion chewables, one in the morning and one at night. That's half of the normal post op bariatric dosing. In the beginning, they were gross and took a while to get used to and by the time surgery came around I was used to them and post op, I resumed them the day after I came home from the hospital and never had nausea. I feel like if I had never taken them pre op, and started them post op... there could've been some nausea and intolerance because they're not the most pleasant things to get used to. Just make sure to take them after a Protein Shake or food of some sort to prevent nausea the best you can.

Best wishes!

I have to be on a liquid diet for two weeks post op and then I will start my Vitamin chews. I'm day 11 now, so after I see my dietician. I'll start them and on to the puried diet.

I did chewables the first 2 weeks. Started those the day I got home. At the 2 week mark, I started slowly taking regular pills and Vitamins (spaced them all out through the day, with meals) and at the 4 week mark, I could take them at the start of my day, with Breakfast, like normal.

I was advised to take them as soon as I got home (i.e., tue day after surgery).

And yes, they made me nauseous…particularly the Calcium pills, and the Multivitamin to a lesser degree, but still quease-inducing.

After a few weeks I switched to calcium chews, which where much better, and I dealt with the multivitamin as best i could (i tolerated them better when i had something in my stomach, but i ate very, very little the first month, so it was challenging.

Around 2 months post, when i could stand to eat again, i would bury my multivitamin in a tbsp of greek yogurt and down it. That seemed to do the trick.

Started when I got home so about day 4. And the Vitamins I was advised were capsules. They were a little difficult to swallow for day or so until the swelling in my throat fully disappeared. Always take your vitamins after you eat or with your last sip/bite. It may not solve any nausea issues but it will help some. Also don’t be afraid to spread them out across the day if you have to take multiple vitamins. I took one of the 2 a day I had to take in the morning & one at night.

I was instructed to take chewables the day I was home from the hospital. I couldn't, i tried tons of different brands and flavors (even liquid) and wasted so much money. They are all horrible. Horrible texture and even worse taste. You think they could figure this out!

I worked with my team but they were not very concerned about it that early on. At my 2 week follow up the surgeon allowed me to start pills and/or capsules as long as I could handle them. Luckily I had no issues so I have been on capsules since 2 weeks after surgery.

I started taking them right out of the hospital. The chewable ones. I didn’t have any issue. The one time I did have issue was when I was in a hurry one day and took it without drinking the full shake first. I threw up but immediately felt better afterwards. Now I still drink a shake for breakfast most days and I’ve just gotten into the habit that the last sip of the shake is to take my Vitamin. If I feel hungry and eat food for breakfast I take it after I am done eating.

Same here. Everything but Calcium, Iron, and D3. However, after taking them I get an achy tummy. It's really hard to take them on pure liquids, honestly. It just sits there and makes her unhappy I think. My guess is until I'm on soft foods and can take them with food, they might continue to do that. I try to get them in with my Protein Drink when I can. Still figuring out my rhythm.

My plan says 7 to 10 days after surgery. However, since the healing process is different for everyone and some cannot tolerate it so soon they said it could be later but within 30 days of surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
