Surgery in November.. VSG with OSA

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. ๐Ÿ‘‹

I am a 175kg/385lb 23-year old female from Australia and am due for my VSG on November 30th.

I am wanting to know how everyone with Obstructive sleep Apnea went with their surgeries?

I have trouble tolerating my CPAP, however I am trying my best and keeping it on longer and longer each night.

Have recently just quit nicotine vaping too and am really struggling.

I'm hoping to find some friends or support networks for people who are going into surgery around a similar time as me.

Any and ALL advice/opinions are welcome! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Go into the forum drop down box, choose Gastric sleeve surgeries and in there you will find 42 pages of November sleeve buddies.

My husband also had trouble with his machine. It took time to tolerate it. He had to change his mask and also have a Water reservoir to make him comfortable.

Is your worry about the surgery or the time in hospital or when you are at home? From what I have read on here, people do not have Apnoea for long after surgery. Getting rid of your machine will be one of the biggest bonuses

Congrats on your surgery date

I have sleep Apnea and I know they had me bring my machine to the hospital with me. And they set it up in my room, the night I was there I didn't even notice I was wearing my machine because of how tierd I was between the pain meds and the extra groggy feeling from the anastasia I slept pretty hard.... I do tolerate my machine pretty well, but I have had it for about a year and a half or so now. It definitely took me at least 6 months to really adjust to it... mine does have a small Water tank, and I have a few different masks I've tried before I found the one I'm comfortable with and use each night.....

I do know several people that have had either the sleeve or a bypass done who had sleep Apnea, but didn't need there machine for more then 6-8 months after surgery .... each person is different but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and I too :)

Congratulations on your surgery date.

I've used a CPAP for about 12 years now. I'll echo what @summerseeker said. You may need to try different masks to find what works for you. Because I'm a side/stomach sleeper, big masks didn't work for me, but I found that this works pretty well:

https://www.resmed.com/en-us/sleep-apnea/cpap-parts-support/sleep-apnea-full-products-list/cpap-masks/airfit-p10/

I've used one of these exclusively for about 10 years.

As an aside, I'm really hoping to be cured of the sleep apnea as I continue to lose weight. The plan right now is for me to get a new sleep study ~6 months post surgery. Fingers crossed.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
