Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

Recommended Posts

I’m 9 days post op. now on purée stage but everything i ingest hurts. Drinking is more tolerable— i’ll take a sip and will feel it going down, then it will create a bubble then i’ll have to burp before taking another sip.

food on the other hand is torturous. i ate half of a scrambled egg yesterday and felt a sensation that could be compared to insane PMS cramps. Later for dinner had about 1.5oz of ricotta bake….. almost passed out from the pain.

Does anybody have tips? i try to take a 2-3min break between spoonfuls and chewing down on things possibly more than 30 times, nothing works. it’s just miserable after.

Has anyone experienced this? How long did it last and what could I be doing differently?

My guess is you're progressing a bit too fast and/or eating too much. You might try something simpler like a TBS of yogurt and see how you do, Scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult for people at first and the Ricotta Bake might also be a bit much for only 9 days post surgery. For comparison, some plans have you on full liquids for 2 weeks post surgery.

Stay on liquids a bit longer

You probably just need to wait a bit longer before progressing to soft foods. Different surgeons have different post-op diets; mine didn't start soft foods until week 3 (scrambled eggs and ricotta bake are soft foods, not purees). Can you eat pureed foods like yogurt, pudding, refried Beans (when I was in the pureed stage, I was told to puree even refried beans in a food processor until completely smooth)?

my nutrition classified ricotta bake and eggs as puree interestingly enough. i think i’ll do full liquids for a few more days then try some of these others you listed!

THANK YOU ALL!!

Yea I agree. If at any time you have trouble progressing to the next stage back up a step for a Few days and then try again. It’s not an exact science because everyone heals at different rates.

Im only 5 days post op, but I was going over my post op chart and I'm on full liquids until week 2 then puree, for a week more before checking in with my doctor about moving on to soft food.... if you need more suggestions feel free to message me and I could even take some pictures of the booklet my doctor uses, maybe it will help :) good luck hun

I agree with the suggestion to go back to liquids for a few days. It’s not uncommon for people to do this - we heal in our own time. And yes certain foods like eggs can be difficult to tolerate for some.

I’d also talk to your surgeon just to be sure especially because of the pain.

Oh, and being able to feel Water go down, I get that at times & I’m three years post surgery. Only with water though & especially if it’s cool/cold. I also gurgle a lot - a very noisy digestive system.

I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking Water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
