Liquid stage and sodium...?'s

Recommended Posts

So I've been told (from the book I got at my doctors) I can have low-sodium broth, sugar free Jello and sugar free Popsicles. However I've seen people have broth from like chicken noodle Soup (not low sodium), or pho or even vegetable soup just take out all the chunks and said it really helps. However I thought we couldn't do anything with full on sodium? I had my surgery the 27th so it hasn't been that long but I was wondering as to what other options I can have at this time.

I would ask your team the reason for the no sodium disclaimer. I was allowed full sodium options and I imagine if you don’t have high blood pressure it would not be an issue but I am not a doctor. This could be for a reason that we do not understand so I would contact them and ask.

Likewise, I would ask your doctor or RD on this. It sounds like it could be a holdover or overlap from a cardiac diet that the hospital uses that may not really be appropriate for WLS, unless there are some specific problems associated with your case. From when I was monitoring all of that, it was difficult in those early days to get all that close to the RDA maximums for sodium (though I was more interested in potassium vs. sodium consumption), so it's a legitimate question to ask.

I am using no salt added and low sodium broth. It has made a difference for me as I do not retain fluids and swelling has dramatically gone down. My gastric bypass was on sept19 and am on clear fluids untill Tuesday when I move onto liquid diet. Cutting salt is not bad and I do not plan to return to being a salt a holic like I was in my past. If you are determined to make the proper change then go full out , half assing it just is not in the cards. Don't cheat yourself ! My two cents. Best wishes and keep at it!! We are here for you always.

Ya I don't have high blood pressure, or anything like that. Just in the book it says low sodium. So I was curious. Thank you.

Thank you! I was just curious but I'm sure I could've let my mind go to adding salt back in my life so thank you for this, I will personally stick to low sodium for my own benefits 😊

Actually I was advised to increase my salt intake to help boost my low blood pressure.

You are eating so little at the moment & wouldn’t be adding additional salt to your diet, that any salt intake from the broth you are consuming would be minimal. Your daily intake would be considerably less than the general recommended level anyway. Why not ask how much you can have on a low sodium diet (& ask about the reason for it) & then do the maths & adjust your food choices accordingly.

Our bodies need some salt, more if you live in a hot environment, exercise heavily & sweat a lot. (My uncle’s cardiologist put him on a low salt diet but didn’t take into consideration he worked outside in central Queensland. He collapsed because his levels were too low.)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
