Weight gain going into week three

Recommended Posts

I lost a lot of weight quickly but this week I am gaining. I am not eating a lot but the scale is moving up. I remember seeing a lot of people around week three hit a stall, but not a gain necessarily. I am wondering if this is because I am eating Soups and I have sodium retention. How was your third week? Were you able to get it moving again, if so any tips?

How much is it going up? The reality is weight loss is never a straight downward line. It zigs & zags & goes up & down.

A gain could be Fluid retention (as you said you have), Constipation, hormonal fluctuations, your usual weight fluctuation, etc. as long as your general trend is downwards your doing fine. Do you weigh less today then you did three weeks ago?

And yes stalls happen. The first often around week three ( yes, I did say first) & they can last 1-3 weeks. They are just your body shutting down (needing a break) in response to the stress of all the changes (to your diet, reduced calories, surgery, weight loss, etc.). They always break & you’ll start losing again when your body is ready.

Thanks, on some level I knew that. It's just it is fluctuating up 4lbs ad that scared me. It's funny because I know that I have to step away from the scale, it is just so hard to do.

Everyone fluctuates. Bariatric or not, it is normal.

Try to stop weighing yourself so much, try to keep it to once a week. Same day every week. Then you won't see every little up and down but will see the results.

Everyone above is right, lot's of reasons your weight might fluctuate.

There's one reason I can guarantee you it's NOT. That you gained fat. While this is a bit of an oversimplification, you would have needed to eat 3500 calories more that you burned in the last week to gain just 1 pound of fat. Since at 3 weeks, you're probably not even eating 3500 calories in a week, I's a safe bet that whatever else is causing your overall weight to fluctuate, it's not that you added fat.

I tend to gain 2-4 pounds anytime I hit a stall, and then I stay there for a few weeks. Once the stall breaks, I drop like 6 pounds at once. It's normal, and it'll pass. Just be patient.

I just think my second stall ended but mine are the same. I gained 1-2 lbs and then stayed there for about 2 weeks and then this week I have lost 5 lbs so far (since Monday, 1lb per day) I usually only weigh myself on Monday's but this week did mid week to see if I was out of my stall. 6 month follow up today and I am still a bit ahead of my weight loss chart the surgeon gave me. My chart says I should loose aprox. 97 lbs in 6 months and as of this morning I have lost 106 lbs in those 6 months!

If you are eating as you should it is humanly impossible for you to be gaining weight. As spartanmaker said It take about an extra 3500 calories just to gain ONE pound of fat. This early out you would have to eat all day on purpose to do that. Little fluctuations are common. That’s why most of our teams say to stay away from the scale. I know after sooooo many failed diet attempts it’s hard but try to trust the process. If you follow your plan it works!!

Hello. I can relate! I am a little frustrated because I am in week 7 after having a revision from the sleeve to gastric bypass
The scale has not moved in a week and a half solid!!! I’m not cheating, I am going by ALL the rules!!!

I too am frustrated. I started at 229 the day of my surgery (10.11.22) and have only lost 12 lbs. I see people have lost 20 lbs or more. Now I'm worried I won't lose anymore weight and I'm doing all of this for nothing. I am taking in my Protein and liquids and don't have a lot of room for actual food. I have a yogurt, and ricotta bake I'm going slow because it took me almost 2 hours to eat one yogurt.

I started walking more what else should I be doing? My surgical followup is later this week so I'll see what my surgeon says.

Scared but excited.

Relax you’re doing fine @MyDogsLoveMe. Twelve pounds in three weeks is a pretty darn good achievement. People who lose at a faster rate initially usually start at a much higher weight than you did. Plus we all lose at our own rate. Some weeks you may lose more the next may be less. As long as your general trend is downwards you’re doing great.

Struggling to eat much more than your Protein is the way it goes at least for another couple of weeks when you may be able to get in some vegetables. In your soft food stage, try adding a few vegetables & see how you go. I remember being able to eat a single green bean or a small spoon of steamed cabbage back then. I was able to throw a few vegetables (tomatoes, onion, celery, mushrooms) in Soups & mince dishes & let them simmer away for ages so extra mushy. You’ll slowly be able to eat more & a greater variety of food. Remember you are still healing & are starting the retraining of how & what you eat.

Oh, and I still take about an hour to eat a tub of yoghurt & I’m almost 3.5yrs out. I eat slowly & taking more than 30 minutes to eat anything is usual for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
