Chopstickgirl, this varies from place to place. Many US doctors do it as an outpatient procedure nowadays, but you'll have to check with your surgeon to see how it's done in his or her practice.

My doctor recommends you stay a day or two, but my insurance doesn't cover an overnight, inpatient stay. BUT 23 hours is considered under one day. I wasn't "admitted" until the very last minute, and then was released EXACTLY 23 hours later. This meant that I did indeed spend the night, and was watched closely, but slid in under the wire for insurance restrictions. They also have a very comfortable hospital lounge for you to spend some of the next day in, if you don't quite feel up to going home after you're released. So if you feel bad, or have problems, you just go back upstairs and they readmit you. It was a nice to know I had the option if I needed it.

Alexandra is right, it depends on your doctor. nowadays with insurance companies trippin', they want you out after you regain consciousness.

Mine was yesterday and it was at a surgical center. As soon as I opened my eyes they told my dh to pull the car around, lol. I really felt like I needed a few minutes to fully wake up, but they were helping me dress and walking me to the door!

My surgery was supposed to begin at 12:45, but I think it started a little early, but anyway I was out of there at 2:30.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
