I can eat a lot more than I should - 2 months post op

Recommended Posts

So my Surgery was on June 29 which is a little over 2 months ago but I am noticing my appetite is increasing. I just finished a 6 oz sirloin steak. Is that concerning? Should I be eating up-to 4 oz of food at a time? Am I overeating? I’m still only eating upto 1000 calorie a day but for me to be able to finish a 6 oz steak was alarming. I know people can usually eat 6 oz of food maybe 10 months out but I’m able to eat it now. Any advice?

steak is not something you really should be eating so soon. while every surgeon is different. In my paperwork it said to avoid steak for at least 6 months. BUt you should be taking your time eating. Taking around 30 minutes or so to eat a meal. At 2 months i was to hit a max of around 600-800 calories which i did without issue. If you eat slow you can typically eat more as it gives time for food to move thru your system but you always want to go nice and slow and chew very well.

Best to have a chat with your dietician to work out portion sizes, caloric goals, nutritional needs that are right for you. We all have different needs.

6ozs is actually more than a recommended portion size for any adult. 4ozs is the recommended portion - I can barely eat that three years out. Certainly no where near that 2 months.

As to whether you can eat steak or not is more of an issue of is it allowed on your plan or if you are able to. Many find steak hard to tolerate at first. I was eating steak pretty early on but then I only eat good quality tender cuts, cooked to medium rare & cut into very small bites.

Remember, all because you can doesn’t mean you should.

I was like you. I could physically eat more than expected at every given stage and I mentally could have too. I had to measure my food out and eat until I was satisfied instead of full. Basically I would eat what I had portioned out and minutes later I would realize that I was satisfied at first but eventually I would start feeling satisfied around the time I finished my portion. It takes some getting used to but it can be done.

I think this is where the "your new stomach is a tool" part comes into play. Everything I eat has to fit into a 4 oz or less container, I am terrified of failing and stretching my stomach back out, I can't eat more than 2 oz at this point.

I know my doctor told us 6 months at minimum before we eat red meat.

I think your focus may be on the wrong thing?

I feel like you're asking if there's something wrong with your surgery, but it seems to me the real issue is your mental state and your relationship with food. I say this because you mentioned you shouldn't be able to eat that much, and that it concerns you that you can, yet you still did it anyway.

We all sometimes do things we know we shouldn't, but when the "shouldn'ts" become a habit, we have an issue.

The surgery as a tool will only get you so far. You still have to put in the work to follow your plan. If you're struggling to keep on plan, the help you need may be therapy to understand why you're being driven to over eat.

just because you can doesn't mean you should. It's very important that you prepare ahead of time.

When we fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

I recently put back 10lbs (at 130), i felt my best at about 123-125. I know these things didn't help me.... I stopped logging my food and I started eating more than my amounts...... Past weekend my in-laws were in town and eating around my mother-in-law is not easy. She is always saying "is that all your going to eat". I felt I was being watched the whole time. So Monday, I started back logging and sticking to my portions...... I have lost 2lbs already.

So, Log your food and pre-portion EVERYTHING.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
