Someone just told me about this group and hopefully it helps. I have a few questions , is it normal to want actual real food not the liquid stuff I got to eat. Is it normal or common to actually be hungry like my stomach be growling. Another question has anybody advanced their diet to soft food before they were suppose to. ? Last question does the Patches like the vitamin patches and Iron patches and stuff does that actually work ?

its normal to be hungry, You went thru a major change quickly. Stomach will growl and once you move onto solid foods most notice a lot of rumbling when you eat. As for advancing their diet... dont do that. Follow your surgeons plan. Its there for a reason. For you to heal... Advancing too soon could put you at risk. need time for your stomach to heal. I did the patch Vitamins only for the first few weeks after surgery. Once i healed up and i was on solid foods i switched to regular capsules.

The stomach growls could be acid. Are you on a PPI? After stomach surgery, the stomach produces more acid than normal, which can result in stomach growling sounds and if you're not on a PPI it can cause a sort of gnawing sensation or even mimic the sensation of hunger.

What is a PPI?

Proton Pump Inhibitor. Aka acid controller/reducer. A lot of surgeons prescribe them for a few months after weight loss surgery to reduce the amount of acid that your stomach produces until you're fully healed.

It is normal to hate every step of the staged return to eating and to want to advance faster. Don’t chance it though. The stages are there to allow your stomach time to heal and you could seriously hurt yourself if you advance your diet too quickly. Your stomach growling may take some getting used to. Post surgery a growling tummy doesn’t necessarily mean you are hungry. Mine makes noises all the time. And it’s makes tons of noises while it is digesting. About the Patches. I asked the NP about them and she said that she has been trying for a couple years to get several of the companies to send her evidence that they work and she hasn’t gotten any yet. If you can’t tolorate anything else, it’s better than nothing and hopefully they work for you but if you can tolorate the chews or capsules I personally would stick with them until there is more research to prove that they work for certain.

Is a PPI omeprazole ?

My stomach made all sorts of weird grumbly noises after surgery. It wasn't hunger. It was just my stomach making noises. It was noisier than it ever had been. It was a noisy beast though! I've been on Omeprazole since before my surgery. I had GERD preopp and my doctor wanted me on it post opp because he said it helps with the healing, maybe by reducing the acid? A PPI might help you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
