Weird symptoms - 6 months post op

Recommended Posts

Hey there!

I am about 6 months post op now and have been struggling lately with a sensation of not being able to take a full breath and feeling like I need to dry heave - mostly after I eat no matter what it is and sometimes at random with no food. For example, I just had about four bites of salad and feel shortness of breath and like my throat/esophagus feels "tingly" and makes me feel like I want to gag but not throw up. There's no nausea either - it's simply the sensation that makes me want to gag, almost like needing to sneeze. The need to gag is particularly strong in the morning before I've had any liquids or food too.

At first I thought it was allergies because I have chronic allergy and sinus problems but I got on decongestants and steroid nasal spray and still have the issue. Vapor rub helps me feel like I'm breathing better but still seems odd. I've never had issues with breathing so I am concerned.

I've done some research and see that it could be anything from allergies to a post op hiatal hernia. Has anyone experienced this and if so, what was it for you and how do you fix it? It's not dumping or caused by eating the wrong foods I think. It simply happens at random but tends to be worse after I eat some food or in the morning before I have anything.

Thanks!

I agree. Contact your surgeon. This is unusual & needs to be investigated, especially the shortness of breath, to find the cause.

All the best.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
