“Stuck” Sensation?

Recommended Posts

Hello,
I got RNY about two months ago. Overall things have been going well. However, for the past three days I have had a really strange sensation that won’t go away. It feels like something is stuck at the base of my throat. I have tried Gas X to relieve the sensation but it is not working. It almost feels like it’s difficult to swallow. Has this happened to anyone else?

Try just a couple of sips of Coke. It’s what I had to do when I had that sensation before my RNY.

And call your surgeon!

I'm still pre-surgery, but that sounds a lot like a problem I sometimes have that's attributed to a hiatal hernia. I think you need to call your surgeon. My guess is they'll have to do some imaging, starting with a barium swallow, and maybe an endo.

Thank you both for the replies! So frustrating because I have contacted my surgeon. He recommended the Gas X and that was it but something really doesn’t feel right.

Be persistent. We know our bodies better than anyone else. If the Gas-X isn't helping at all, call back.

Do you have acid reflux? It could be irritation from GERD.

I am currently dealing with that issue. It's been going on for nearly 2 months. The surgeon insisted it was anxiety, which seems to be the go to diagnosis for a lot of things. She put me on Ativan for a week and when I reported back that there's no change, her office scheduled me for an endoscopy with GI. Unfortunately that's not until October 4th.

Perhaps call your surgeon. Could it be silent reflux? I had that a lot after the VSG. A constant feeling of a lump in my throat, along with a constant feeling of having to clear my throat... Etc. Although RNY usually don't have reflux problems, it still happens. Something to do with the length or roux limb.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
