Bariatric friendly pain relievers

Recommended Posts

Hey! I was a tried and true user of ibuprofen before I got my surgery but now that I'm bypassed, it's a no go. I take tylenol as recommended by my doctor for my period cramps and injuries now. I went camping this weekend and hurt my tailbone hiking (took a slip and fell on my booty). Now I have a pretty sore tailbone, it hurts to transition from sitting to standing and hurts to bend down and back up. I have broken my tail bone before so I know it's not broken, just a bad sprain or bruise but man it HURTS!

Tylenol is not doing anything for me and I really don't want to take oxy leftover from my surgery because it's a terrible drug, it makes me constipated and makes me fall asleep. Are there any drugs you take with your bypass that actually relieve pain and don't make you tired/high?

Thanks!

I have chronic pain & will for the rest of my life. I use a lot of Lidocane Patches & BioFreeze but I’m not sure how those would work on your crack.
I have taken ibuprofen occasionally when I’m in a lot of pain (maybe 4 times in the last 4.5 years). I know I shouldn’t but when the Lidocane, BioFreeze, tens unit, heat, ice, Norco & Metaxalone aren’t working I need some relief somehow!

Not sure if you can use these with your job or not, but I use CBD oil and topical CBD products, lidocaine cream and tylenol. I really haven't had to use anything like this since my revision, except last week, I got blinded by the sun and missed a step and banged my knee on the concrete walkway, and I was three weeks post op revision at that point and started back at the gym the day before so I was a bit sore, then the fall on top of all of that... the CBD oil took the edge off of the pain. It's supposed to be really good for muscle recovery anyway.

Maybe try one of those donut pillows that you sit on?

I hope you feel better soon!

Ooo is cbd topical or you take it orally? Does it make you high or show up in a drug test?

It's such a shame because nsaids were the only thing that worked for me! My doc said if I am in terrible pain I can take them very sparingly but I get the sense it's something I shouldn't really be doing. But man this is no good. I will try some icy hot maybe although I don't think it's a muscle thing. I seemed to have fell right on the bone and it's sore. Heat helps me a lot but I am looking for something I can swallow or put on so I can continue with my day. It's definitely tough but I appreciate the insight. I'll check those other options out.

I take the tincture that you place under your tongue and the topical balm. I don't feel high or any way from it, but it (can) will show up on drug tests. :(

Maybe call your team and see what they recommend. Maybe they will call you something in that isn't an opioid or nsaid, but something safe and stronger than Tylenol.

If you have chronic pain, I would (and did) get myself to a pain management specialist.

There are all kinds of new therapies for chronic pain and pain management stays on top of them.

I swear by them.

Good luck,

Tek

I believe that topical anti inflammatory creams are okay because they aren’t absorbed through your digestive system but through your skin. So you could apply anti inflammatory creams like Voltarin, the old tiger balm, etc. for some relief. But do check with your surgeon first.

Hope you recover soon. Any sort of back pain is awful.

I forgot I also use ThermaCare heat packs! They stay hot for up to 8 hours. The ones for menstrual pain are a big sticker! The ones for shoulder use are sticky on both ends. They are by the Icyhot in the stores.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
