I had RNY GBS in June, 2007. My pre-op weight was 415 lbs and my BMI was 61. I wore 5XL shirts and 54 waist pants, my suit jacket was 60”. I lost 100 lbs in the first 12 weeks and after my total body lift in 2009, I had shed 182 lbs. I’ve stayed right around 240-250 lbs for 13 years. I have had dumping syndrome (UGH!) and all the pleasantries of plastic surgery. The most frequently asked question is “would you do it again?” And, my answer is always yes. I was in terrible health and feared losing my job because of my health issues. I regained my health and worked another 14 years (31 years total when I “retired” in 2021). I’m able to keep up with my grandkids and I went back to college full-time. I’m glad I took the leap. It changed my life.

I say “retired” because the new owners decided to permanently close the facility where I worked. I’m not eligible to start drawing pension for 3 more years. Fortunately, we were eligible for Trade Act benefits, so I went back to college full time. I can draw unemployment until I graduate. Good thing I made Dean’s List the first two semesters, eh?

Well that certainly is making bad situation great.

There was a time when I wanted to go to school for my avocation but could never get more than a semester before a new project came up that demanded all my time. I'm too tired now :)

Again, congratulations.

Good luck,

Tek

Thank you for sharing this. I got the bypass a little over a year ago. I am one of those people that if something can go wrong, I'd be in that minority. With the band (slip/erosion), and then the sleeve (esophagitis and severe gerd). Many people have both of those for life, but unfortunately, each time I was forced to revise or live in pain. I am extremely happy with my RNY, and I sure hope I will be able to look back 15 years from now and still be healthy.

I was extremely fortunate to not have any complications. I can still remember my mother having a gastric bypass in the mid-1970s. She had a number of problems, but GBS was a relatively new procedure. It’s improved drastically since then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
