Egg issue and protein water/shake issue

I am 6 wk post op since I started the foods again, I've had a problem with eggs and certain dairy. But I'm ok with cheese which makes no sense. Also if I drink any Protein product I've tried all including unflavored. I get a terrible nausea pressure feeling and I can't eat or drink for hours or I just gag /throw it up. Any suggestions on taking in extra protein? I'm having lentils, chicken and other sources of protein but I know I'm not making my daily. Mind you before surgery. I loved eggs so I'm not sure why. I keep trying to have them again and I really can't tolerate them but I've had no issue with cheese at all.

It's a learning curve.

Apparently a lot of people struggle with eggs and dairy. Sometimes it passes.

Things you like before surgery you sometimes can't stand after and vise versa.

My team says, try again in a few weeks if there is something you can't tolerate.

Luckily I didn't really have any issues transitioning back into a normal diet.

You got this, just be patient!

food tolerances definitely can change post-op. If you aren't tolerating eggs well, take a break for a few weeks and try again later. There is no requirement to eat any specific food, especially if it is upsetting your stomach or making you sick.

If you are tolerating cheese well, have you tried cottage cheese? That is a great source of Protein and is often well tolerated. Canned tuna, soy (soy Beans, soy milk, tofu, etc), and deli meat can all be good sources of protein and are often well tolerated.

As far as Protein Drinks, have you tried protein waters like Protein2o? I liked those much better than shakes when I was first post-op. You could also try a vegan Protein Powder and see if that works better for you.

If you continue to not be able to hit your protein goals, definitely reach out to your team. Making sure you get enough protein is critical to not losing lean muscle mass and developing nutritional deficiencies, They should be able to provide support & guidance to help keep you on track!

There are foods that I still have trouble eating even at 8 months out. Salmon and chicken being my biggest failures. I have continued trying them and I can tolerate a small amount of each so I will keep on trying them. eggs took me quite a while for my tummy to tolerate them.

In the UK we are not told to drink Protein Shakes as much as in the USA. I have had skimmed milk since my pre op diet and still drink a pint a day to get me to my Protein goal. My new tummy is very small and I cant eat enough at each meal to get me there with out milk and another small snack a day

Protein yogurts have been my saviours. Once I found one I like - Aldi is my go to. I can now make my protein goals almost every day. If I am short I have more protein yogurt in the evening.

I'm not an egg person. I really wish I was though. I ate and still eat a lot of cheese. May I suggest bread cheese aka Finnish Squeeky Cheese and grill it. It tastes like grilled cheese sandwich by itself. I lived on that stuff for a long time. It's high protein too. My favorites are bacon bread cheese or garlic jalapeno. I get mine online at Carr Valley website but you can get it anywhere and it keeps in fridge for forever.

You could have a lactose sensitivity which has fewer symptoms than a full lactose intolerance. It’s not uncommon for this to develop after surgery & it usually is only temporary. Look for non dairy, lactose free plant based shakes & lactose free milk. Generally cheese & yoghurt don’t cause as much of an issue - something to do with the cultures used to make them - but it may be worth trying some lactose free, plant based cheese & yoghurts just in case.

An aversion to or difficulty with eggs isn’t uncommon either. It usually is temporary too.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
