I am a week into my PreOP Diet and doing really well, 8 lbs. down so far... But I can't kick my coffee! 😫 I drink it black for the most part, sometimes I will put about a Tablespoon of my Protein Shake in it, so no excess sugar.

I don't have a sensitive stomach at all, so that is not an issue. has anyone else not give up the coffee?

I didn’t drink coffee. I drank Coke Zero and I gave it up months prior to surgery because I wanted to know I could do it. Post surgery I was offered coffee in the hospital though and told I was allowed caffeine in moderation. I eventually started the caffe latte Protein Drinks that have caffeine by premiere Protein. I have one of those every morning now. Even still over a year out. Every surgeon is different though and some do not allow caffeine post surgery so double check with your team.

some people don't have to give it up. I think most of us do - at least temporarily. A few are told to give it up for life.

I can't even imagine that. I don't care about most food all that much. But I love coffee...lol.

Neither of my surgeons ever advised me to stop drinking coffee. My current surgeon even gave me a print out of the diet he expects from me and it has a smoothie recipe that has a shot of espresso in it. lol

Mine said they ask people to do it due to it irritating the stomach, but I have been a heavy coffee drinker for 20+ years...

Have you tried Decaf? It can take a while to find the right one (it did for me anyway), but once I found one I like, I drink it exclusively. I actually feel better now than I did drinking the "high octane" stuff.

During my pre op diet i was specifically told not to give up coffee lol. They said the pre op liquid diet is hard enough. They didnt want people going thru caffeine withdrawal tho they said no sugar and regular Creamer. So i used Stevia sweetener and sugar free creamer. I also had the Premier Protein Coffee drink and wow that hit the spot during the pre op diet. it has caffeine in it.

I have, but they actually say it is the acidity of coffee in general that can be the issue.

Me too. I'm addicted to coffee and drink black dark roast Starbucks cold brew in my cup all.day.long. My team advised me not to but I'm sorry, I can't do it. I tried. I succeeded during the pre-op and phased eating stages but I don't foresee living my life without coffee. It's just not in the cards.

Good luck!

There are also low acid varieties for those that need to cut down on acid as well.

I was never told to give up coffee and I don't think I would have been able to. Drank it right through my pre-op diet and immediately post op. Might actually have been a game changer for me if my surgeon had recommended it but thankfully he didn't.

It’s the acidity on your healing tummy that’s the concern. It irritates the stomach lining & stimulates acid production. Post surgery your tummy has been cut & is a wound which needs to be protected while healing. Also post surgery, our acid production often increases in response to the surgery & reduced diet anyway which is why many of us are prescribed an PPI which reduces acid production for a few months after surgery.

Yes, some people drink coffee post surgery without issue but that’s just part of our individual differences. Personally I would think cutting out or reducing your caffeine intake pre surgery would be better then trying to do it when recovering from surgery which is stressful enough on our bodies, emotions & thinking.

But it’s up to you how you want to manage it but ensure you keep your team informed what you decide to do.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
