About a week out, no hunger, little drinking

Recommended Posts

I'm about a week out, and still feel awful. I haven't been hungry since the operation, and force myself to drink for my own health. I am averaging about 1.5 carnation Protein enhanced 8 ounce drinks a day. Trying to bring that up to 2.

Did anyone else lose appetite, and have difficulty downing the Protein Drinks in sufficient number?

Things seem much better today (Monday) than they have before. Today is one week since surgery, and I can finally drink an 8 ounce Carnation instant Breakfast in under an hour. I'm still not well enough to return to work, maybe in a couple of days.

Enjoy it, I was ecstatic about not being hungry, and 'forcing' myself to get nutrition in... mine lasted about 2 weeks.

I'm not supposed to have more than 4 oz in 30 minutes....so I wouldn't worry about not being able to drink 8 oz at once!!

Hey, just a question for you guys about drinking..

I was banded on 12/13 and for the first couple of days I was taking small sips of fluids, but now, I feel as though I could take bigger, large gulps. I haven't because I'm afraid that this will ruin the pouch/band.

However, is it normal that I'm not having difficulties drinking more than itty bitty sips? It's just one of those things that I'm contemplating.

I'm in the same boat. I'm making myself not drink more than 4 oz in 30 minutes, but gulping seems to be no problem. It does give me a little gas, but other than that doesn't hurt. I'm still trying not to do it- it only occasionally happens when I forget about the band.

I lost my appetite about 2 days before surgery (liquid diet), and have never really gotten it back. It's very, very rare that I feel hungry. It's not unusual that I go all day and eat nothing, and come dinner time I'm still not hungry but eat something or have a Protein drink anyway.

I'm not alone - a while back I started a thread on this, and more people than I would have anticipated reported the exact same thing.

i didnt start getting truly hungry until about 3rd week out. PUSH liquids though, you do not want to get dehydrated.

congrats on being banded.

It is now almost 2 weeks. I can consume fluids without a problem. The liquid diet is getting to me. There are occasional bouts of hunger, but they seems cured easily by drinking a bit more.

keep up the Protein and A LITTLE fat... it will help keep you fuller longer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
