For those of you that I've seen talking about starving during pre-op, I was that way too until I changed my strategy. 90% of the liquid I consumed had Protein in it. Protein Water with additional protein gels. I love the Protein2O. Also the single serve Protein Shots from this site. Started my day with that shot, had another one mid afternoon. Sipped on the protein Water with extra protein once in am, 2nd on in PM. Then had a protein chicken or beef broth around dinner time, and I wasn't even that hungry by that point. Threw in some plain water here and there. I got all of the supplies off of this site besides the protein water that I got off Amazon. I couldn't do shakes, but this approach really took care of my hunger! Hope this helps someone.

Just keep in mind that it is possible to have TOO much protein and it can be bad for you. I think it’s bad for your kidneys. Everyone’s protein goal will be different. Check with your team. It may be okay to go over as a short term strategy but I would check with your dr to make sure.

Tomorrow is finally the day! I haven't even packed my bag yet but I don't plan on taking much anyway. My biggest fear is that they won't let my husband stay with me overnight. We live over an hour away from the hospital so it would not be fun for him to be driving up only for visiting hours. Plus we both want to be together so it would cause a lot of anxiety if they won't let him stay. I am scheduled for my bypass at 9am so at least I don't have to get up too early. Not looking forward to the gas pain after surgery but so ready to finally have this surgery done. I started this process in Dec, so it's a long time coming. Also tired of the liquid diet so one step closer to real food is great. I'm even looking forward to pureed food at this point. Before I was sooo grossed out by the thought of it. I'm not even hungry on the liquid diet anymore but I'm bored with the same flavors and my intestines have not been happy on a high Protein no Fiber diet. Just ready to start my new life and eventually get back to a new normal. Can't wait to see what life looks and feels like in 3 months, so exciting! I think a lot of us have surgery tomorrow so good luck to us all and speedy recovery.

I’m experiencing one of those weak points.. it’s been 5 days since surgery.. I’ve been trying to figure out how we are possibly going to take in 60 g of Protein and then our liquids 65 oz.. I can barely tolerate 1/2 cup protein per meal.. I’ve been looking through paperwork and am getting conflicting info.. any suggestions? In trying to comply I’m in pain and really experiencing lots of burping.. very uncomfortable.

Can you combine them? Protein waters like Protein2o and Gatorade Zero + Protein should count as both. Same for Bone Broth or regular broth with added unflavored Protein Powder.

Yesterday (Day 6) I woke up with a horrible pain on the left under my diaphragm. It is easing up today but it was hard to even breathe. I was so scarred that I was leaking. I'm not and it eased up today, but I was definitely shaken. I ended up listening to a 2-hour seminar on what to expect and reading a whole book. What I have come to realize is that everyone does things so differently. My follow up is Tuesday, I have so many questions. Struggling to get enough Water and have lost 12 pounds already since surgery date. I found this pre-surgery class super helpful: It is on Youtube Pre-operative Nutrition Class by Jessica Snyder (I am not affiliated nor know these people. I just found it helpful).

I had a lot of burping too the first week, it gets better but it really does make it hard to drink anything. I chewed a couple of gasx each day trying to get the burping to chill. It felt like even the smallest sip was enough to make me burp.

Does your paperwork work explicitly say "water" or does it say "liquid"? Some plans keep Water and protein (even in drinks) separate (dumb), but mine luckily considers everything I'm allowed, including Jello and pudding, to be a liquid.

If your plan says liquid, I would try protein waters, I use a clear protein powder drink mix every day. Also, I occasionally add electrolyte powder to the mix just in case.

Don't beat yourself up too much about your intake, just keep trying for more each day, I'll be 3 weeks post on Tuesday and I'm just now meeting my protein goal but still about 20oz behind on my liquid goal.

I had pain/pressure under my diaphragm around that time too, but it showed up when I was either reclining or going to bed. It worried me but it went away and hasn't been back for a week, so assume it was the last of the gas in my chest.

Today is a bit better. I am back to putting everything into myfitnesspal and my Protein is okay. I was super dehyrdrated though, so that could have been some of it as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
