Band done by Local Anaesthesia

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I have my operation booked for the end of January 08. I am in the UK and I am having it done privately.

Yesterday I was reading a book and it mentioned that Dr. Hans Finsterer did abdominal surgery using Local Anaesthesia only.

I have been very nervous about going under General as it just really freaks me out. Does anyone know any doctors that perform the band surgery under Local anesthetic only?

I think it is a brilliant idea as it cuts out all the blood clot possibilities etc..

Thanks

Lauren

When you say this doc did abdominal surgery, are you referring to band surgery? There are some abdominal procedures that can be done with a local, for example, removing a port. But to do a band I'm comfortable saying you wouldn't want to be awake for that. A local will numb your skin, not yer innerds. :) Are you sure it was a local anesthetic vs. a spinal?

I think if any doc did do a band with a local only he wouldn't have a license for very long and his medical malpractice might dump him as well.

There are still risks for blood clots with a surgical procedure regardless of anesthesia.

The general anesthesia had me completely freaked out before i got the surgery... when i came to i felt like i took a nap... it really is no big deal... Its scary the first time but trust you'll be glad it was done under general..

And definitely take into consideration what wasa said.. she brings up a good point... its kinds scary thinking a Dr. would do this under a local.. OUCH!!!:)

I was and continue to be terrified of general anesthesia, at the same time, that is how this procedure is done. I don't feel qualified to tell the doctor how to do his work. The nice part was once I got to the operating room, the lights went out, than came back on almost instantly. When they came on, I was certainly hurting.

I was very afraid of going under, as my last experience with it was when I had my tonsils removed in 1998 or 99. Apparently the anestesoligist told me that general anesthesia has improved a lot since then. I had woken up too early with my tonsils and still had my eyes taped shut. This time around it was very relaxing and I was fine, out through the whole surgery.
