Hi all! I’m 8 days post op RNY and I have a question that I haven’t found the answer to while googling. I’ll call my nutritionist tomorrow and ask but just wondering if it’s possible to add Protein Powder to my pre-mixed shakes? Or is that too much Protein at once? I’m having a hard time drinking as many Protein Shakes as I need but I just can’t fit them in. Between drinking all the Water and waiting 30min before and after the day gets way from me. I have a shake in the morning like 8am and I’m still full by 2-3pm.

From what I remember your body can only process/ absorb a certain amount of Protein at a time so any more would just be excreted out and a waste but check with your dietician to see what they say

Ok, thank you! I guess that makes sense. It’s the same with Vitamins. I sure wish it was feasible though. Would make reaching my Protein goal so much easier!

Are you adding Protein to your Water ? You could try that to get it in.

What if you did the clear Protein Drinks? They are not thick at all so maybe they won’t fill you up.

I was told it's ok post-op to add powder to your shakes because you drink so slowly your body has time to absorb it. Definitely ask you nutritionist.

You can only absorb 30g of Protein at a time so adding any additional protein is a waste per my dietician. Maybe try protein Water?

thats interesting, never thought about that, but the first thing i thought about was, its gonna back you up even faster. My dietician says the high Protein does that. Im 8 mos out RNY, and thats my biggest struggle. I take daily stool softener along with laxative 2 times a week.

I don’t need that problem! Thanks for the input.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
