I am really down today. Was scheduled for surgery today and went through almost the whole process, only to wake up and find out they couldnt operate because my liver was to large. I am looking for suggestions on foods that will help shrink my liver in a healthy way.

I wasn't able to follow the two week diet and ate up to the last day. I was told by a friend who also had this done to drink two bottles of Magnesium 48 to 24 hours before your surgery. I did just that to but the down side your bm turns into Water.

I am sorry you didn't get your surgery. It must be a real shock to find you have a enlarged liver. Were you given a pre op diet ? Nearly all of us were given them to shrink our liver pre surgery.

Oh no! That is horrible. I am so sorry!

Did your surgeon put on you a pre-op liver shrinking diet?

Are they willing to try again? Maybe you need a stricter, longer diet to help?

Ooh that really sucks. I’m so sorry. Hopefully they can put you on a stricter pre op diet and you will be fine.

Did they open you up and close you back up? or did you get a scan of some kind to see the liver? but the best way to shrink the liver is the liquid diet we get put on. some are put on it for a few days while others for weeks. the longer the better to shrink the liver.

WOW!!! I have heard that they would do that if the liver was too big but never heard of it actually happening. How horrible.

WHOA! Yes, I am very sorry to hear that @gina923 that is horrible.

@liveaboard15 Yes, same here. We were warned about that and not doing to bowel prep properly that he may not be able to continue with surgery but I have never actually heard of it happening!

That sucks!

Oh man, I'm so sorry. What kind of pre op diet were you on? I was on a 2 week all liquid diet. It was BRUTAL, but I wanted to make sure the surgery happened. Is your doctor willing to try again?

Did you follow the pre op liquid diet properly? Some surgeons only want three or four days, but most want two weeks to ensure the liquid diet.

it is designed to shrink the liver for surgery and very important it is followed. If you cheat on it, it is a sign you are not a good candidate for surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
