My husband has always complained about my snoring but one night he keeped waking me up and he said I stopped breathing and it scared him. Before I got out of the military my doctor suggested that I might have it but I never botherd to get tested because it did not sound serious to me. But Now I have been noticing that no matter how early I go to sleep I still wake up at night and I fall asleeo at work or even while driving. I'm thinking about going to my doctor to get tested or should I wait and get tested with the lap band surgean? Can anyone with sleeo apens tell me if it sounds like I have it? Is it serious? Should I go see my Doctor now?:help::help::help:

You need to get this taken care of ASAP!!! sleep apnea is very dangerous because you stop breathing. If this happens during surgery it can be fatal. More than likely, your lapband surgeon will not do surgery until you have it taken care of. It is a treatable condition, but the surgeon must be aware of it before surgery.

Good luck!!! :notagree

Der Tyme, yes, this is very serious and you should see the doctor as soon as you can. I speak from experience. I have lost 35 since August, and my snoring has disappeared - you'd be surprised how many ailments have gone away with just losing such little weight already .... hang in there, it can be done !!

Tyme...you need a sleep study right away! I have sleep apnea and I did the same thing. Sleep apnea can go away with weight loss, but not until you loose at least 25 percent of your body weight. Everyone is different. I use a CPAP machine. I have had it for about 4 years. It was hard to get used to the machine, but now I can't sleep without it. Sleep apnea is extremely dangerous. It can cause a heart attack or stroke, plus you are a danger on the road. I kept falling asleep at the wheel too. The lap band surgeon can't help you with this. Your primary Dr. will send you to a pulmonary specialist who can order a sleep study and get you on the right track

It does sound like sleep apnea to me. The only way to know for sure is to schedule a sleep study. I have it too, and even though I've lost quite a bit of weight, I know that it is still an issue. Thin people can have sleep apnea too. You need to check it out. People have been know to die from sleep apnea (Reggie White--a former Green Bay Packer for one) and it also contributes to hypertension. Talk to your doctor today.

I have sleep apnea also, and I use a CPAP machine at night. I had similar problems, but it got scary when I fell asleep driving. Like the others have said, there are many, many health issues that go along with sleep apnea. My health, both physical and emotional, has improved drastically since dealing with my sleep issues. Please get to your doctor immediately to have this problem addressed. You will be so glad you did!

I have sleep apena also. I was tested before I went to the band doctor. I do have a cpap machine and doing well with it. You just need to do at least on night at sleep clinic and then they might have you come back if they did not check you out for a machine at the first one. I feel that is one of the reason why I was approved for the band.

I have sleep apnea also. I suspected I had it so went to my PCP before I started the Lap-Band procedure. I had a sleep study in my own home. The tech just wired me up before I went to bed and monitored me from another room. It turns out that I have severe sleep apnea. I got my cpap machine and got used to it before I had my Lap-band surgery.

It is serious. My friends son died from it. On the plus side, if you do have it, it will a help when your insurance decides whether or not to approve your surgery.

I had a sleep study done and it determined that I stop breathing 37 times every hour. That is extremely dangerous. I have a CPAP machine and my lovely and patient Wife says I no longer snore. I'm also hoping that losing weight will alleviate the need for the mask.

Hang in there!

:help:I have sleep apnea and no I don't think you should get your lap band dr. to test you because it takes a dr. who is trained in this area to do it. The have special equipment they use for an overnight sleep study. It is

possible that it is caused by your weight and losing weight can help but mine is the obstructive kind and that is more of less genetics!! I wish

you luck girl, cause it is not fun!!

tyme4change-take care of that right now!!! that will even look better on the letter the surgeon will have to write to the insurance company for approval (unless you've already went throught the process)

I didn't know anything about sleep apnea, and initially declined to have a sleep study. Then I began reading posts on the forum and realized I better learn more about it. I then ran as fast as I could to the sleep lab for the test. I definitely have sleep apnea and go for my second appt. in a couple of weeks. I am so grateful for all the posts and candid talk on this forum. It educated me and now I will be protected going into surgery. You will be glad you got this checked out. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
