October 2022 surgery support

October is a month of life changing experiences for us all. Feeling nervous, having second thoughts, eating all our favs prior to commencement, is what's going through all our minds. We are all on a journey to better our health, prolong our life & most of all feel good about ourselves. We've got this. Prayers for us all.

my husband wanted to do a “food tour” with me to eat all the things that I wouldn’t be able to eat in quantity after surgery… I actually turned him down because I just didn’t feel the need. I totally see why people would, however!!! (Different diets/ mindsets/ approaches are all good because people are different and that should be embraced.)

Its amazing to me how my mindset has changed this year. I knew from my binge history nothing could be taboo or not available to me, but I could make a choice about quantity, frequency and speed of eating. That empowering thought has helped a LOT to overcome a lot of my binging and overeating issues.

I feel so ready for the body changes that will come after surgery and continuing surgery to change my lifestyle to achieve my goals. (now, changes to my relationship…ugh.. that’s a different thread lol)

Booked for 4th October and pre-op in a week, huge step for me. How are others coping with the liver-reduction diet?

I have started the pre op early. To prep myself when it begins.

My preop is Breakfast shake, lunch shake, dinner 4 oz of lean meat/tuna and 2 cups of non starchy veggies. 1 snack (2 string cheese or 6 oz carb master yogurt, or 1 cheese string and 4 oz of carb master yogurt) I think I can do other Snacks but I don’t like them.

My WLS team advise me I was pant to do 4 oz eggs for dinner. Eggs seem to fill me up and keep me fuller longer.

Bone Broth has become my best friend. I really like the chicken Zoup Bone broth. It curbs those cravings. And the Calcium citrat chews, at 4pm I chow down on those 3 that I am allowed to have. But will have to stop them 9-27-22.

All I can say to prep myself and keep myself in track is to remember Be BORING when it comes to my food. And keep my focus on my goal.

It is really hard when I am cooking for my kid, and making them sweet tea or buying them snacks. LOL my kid asked if it was bad thing I had to cook. I said “I guess that depends on who is doing the cooking and who is doing the eating” lol

He tells me it’s isn’t that bad. I said good you can do it with me. He laughed and said ummm I don’t have a relationship with food the way you do. And I am already skinny. (He was not being negative, we have a sarcastic joking relationship) I just reminded him he said the diet wasn’t that bad. He laughed and said I am don’t need to suffer cause you had a toxic relationship with food.

I am going I am going to get a new healthy relationship with food and set those boundaries!!!!

The other I forget to mention is I use diet ocean spray, and I mix it with vital Protein Powder. This helps with hunger and feeling full. I will also use Fiber mix from Bariatric Advantage, haven’t tried any other brand. The fiber I mix with Water and drink it fast cause it doesn’t dissolve. I also make to take gasx and I take a dose of Miralax everyday to avoid gas and Constipation.

i transitioned to my pre op diet in august.

Mine is 50 carbs a day (total, not net). I knew with my eating disorder issues I needed to slide slower in it so I would not backlash into binging so I transitioned down over a couple weeks. Been about three weeks at 50 carbs a day (ok, had about two days that i did less than 75) and it’s going well. I can eat a wide variety of things to keep it interesting. Early on i was ravenously hungry despite eating plenty but my brother (who has done Keto before) told me to up my fat content and the hunger disappeared.

I totally miss some foods, but not a lot. Beans used to be a big part of my diet and they are too carb filled for now. Rice, pasta/noodles and tortillas were also staples and are now not good choices. And most fruit is very carb filled, but occasionally I will carb budget for a lovely apple which tastes so sweet now. I had already cut out most bread so that wasn’t a big deal.

following the diet I have lost 18.6 lbs in three weeks (69.6 in 2022 total) … so worth the shift in eating!

I have my surgery date again. Oct 5th. I guess there was a mix up with insurance, but all paperwork is signed. I have my pre-assessment Thursday with anesthesia and will start my 1 week liquid diet next week. When I first started this new season of my life, I thought waiting for surgery was going to be awful, but it wasn't. The summer flew by, I was able to do alot of research and joined this support group. And best of all, I've lost 45lbs so far. Congrats to those who also have October dates. Thanks to everyone who post and shares their stories as it has me more prepared and a little less anxious for my upcoming day.

Congrats to all my October buddies. My surgery date is October 3rd. I started my pre-op liquid diet yesterday and it seems surprisingly easy. I do wonder how I will feel about it next week though. I am isolated in my daily life. I am over 50, single with no kids at home or nearby, I work from home and live in a suburban area that is mostly made up of families and traveling plant workers and I don't know anyone - no support system in place. Who else is going through this completely alone? I am arranging paid transportation to the med center and a paid medical transport to bring me home following the procedure. For those of you who have had to go through this by yourself, did you feel able to manage alone post-op? What was the most difficult thing?

I'm in the same situation going through a separation, have no family near me but so confident & ready to get this done.

I just scheduled my surgery for October 4th! I am also going to get the VSG. I have been working with my surgeon since May. I have a pre op weight loss goal that I’m still working on, and I had already lost some weight before meeting the surgeon. In total they want me to be down 57 pounds from my heaviest weight. I have about 20 pounds to go still. I’m also working on the fast food bit. That’s definitely been a hard one for me. It’s so easy to just want to pick something up after a long day.

Hey Im scheduled for the third! Have you started preop yet?

My surgeon is having me do a 10 day liquid diet so I will start that this weekend actually! My nerves are definitely starting to kick in! How are you feeling getting closer?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
