Back home from the hospital and in pain

Recommended Posts

I’m not sure if it’s normal but some of my incisions are hurting like crazy that I can’t even sit on the toilet. Is this normal? I’m having pain medications like Tylenol and the prescription pain medicine only if needed. Is this normal? I got back from the hospital today so I’m only 2nd post op. When does these incision pains go away?

Thank you all.

The incisions will hurt. You've basically been stabbed multiple times (as one of my surgeons told me, which put the pain into perspective!). It took mine a good week to settle down. It's a painful surgery.

If they gave you narcotic pain meds this is the time to use them. I took my liquid pain meds the first week and it made a huge difference. By week two I didn’t need it anymore and had no real discomfort. Don’t hesitate to use prescribed meds if needed.

It took a week for all but 1 of my incisions to stop hurting. It took another week for my biggest one (the one they removed my stomach from) to stop. And then it was another week before the abdominal muscle under that incision to stop hurting. I took my Oxy pain meds for the first week. After that, just Tylenol, except for when I bumped my incision into the corner of our island. I was in agony, so I took it for another 2 days after that lol But that first week? Oh yeah, pain meds all the way. You have them, that's what they're for, use em and give yourself some relief.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
