Am I doing this right am I broken?

I had RNY surgery 5 days ago. I still have numbness in areas of my stomach, I am feeling faint and nauseous even though I am drinking all the required Clear Liquids daily. I am struggling to get my 60g of Protein. The worst thing though is that I feel like I am STARVING! I get so faint that I lay in bed and it doesn't help at all. I do walk for 5 or so minutes every hour (not counting bathroom visits) All I can think about is food. Is this normal? I want warm solid food instead of cold liquids and Jello. I am on phase 2 but the struggle is real. Will my mindset change or will this be how I feel forever?

You won't be on liquids forever so your mindset will definitely change. Even adding Soups and yogurt helped me SO much. But if you're feeling faint regularly and having trouble getting your Protein, I'd make sure to tell your doctor and/or nutritionist. One thing I've seen here is there are many, many post-op diets, and they may be able to ease up some of the restrictions to help you feel better and meet your requirements.

the first couple weeks are the hardest. you just had major surgery. Need to heel up. Like Doobie said. you wont be on liquids forever. But you gotta follow the steps to make this surgery a success. For me the first month was the roughest. Then it got much easier

The first few weeks are brutal, especially the parts that are all liquid. You'll get through it. But maybe try drinking warm broth (bone broth has more Protein than regular broth), Soups, etc. They're warm, which can make things easier, and can also help you get your protein in.

I am so eager to be moving on to the next phase. I have talked to my doctor and they recommended just staying hydrated at the moment and get what Protein you can. They say I am dehydrated but according to my urine I am definitely not lol. I am having to go to the hospital tomorrow and get some I.V. fluids in hopes that helps with the dizziness. Thank you for your encouragement!

Major life changing surgery was 5 days ago! Don’t be so hard on yourself! Your body needs to adjust. Right now it is saying “WTF?” It might take a few weeks. Once you can start eating more solid food it should get easier.

Five days ago you had major surgery. Give yourself time to heal. As others have said, the first few weeks suck, but it's not forever and you will in time eat normally. But while your stomach is healing, you have to soldier through the program and hit your Protein, Water and Vitamins.

If you need something that isn't sweet, try something umami like a miso Soup which will count towards your Fluid intake. The sweetness of Protein Shakes and water drove me nuts, but I managed to offset it in those early weeks with small amounts of savoury liquid Soups and unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk. It's not fun, but it's doable, and you'll be onto the solid phase in no time.

Thank you! I do need to remember to be kind to myself, I am the type to go by a timeline and if my body isn't at that timeline then I feel like I am failing. I know this is a process/journey and not an instant gratification. I just wanted to know if I was the only one feeling this terrible. I see so many comments on how people heal so well, I guess I just hoped that would be my situation too.

Thank you for your input! You mentioned the sweetness of everything, normally I have an extreme sweet tooth, but I think your right about it just being too much. I will definitely be getting some broth of some kind.

Absolutely normal. Just white-knuckle it through the first few weeks (I recommend trying various activities to distract yourself), and I practically guarantee that a month from now, you'll feel a lot different.

The first 2 or 3 weeks post-op I was so obsessed with food I would watch tiktok videos of people cooking for literally hours every day 😂 Eventually, I stopped caring so much about food and now 7 weeks post-op I hardly think about it at all.

I felt exactly like this for weeks, specifically physical symptoms.
i could barely stand up without feeling like i would black out.
i found out at my followup appointment that i had really low blood pressure.
The nurse recommended that I start drinking Gatorade zero every day.

one full bottle.
I was on to regular soft foods like Soups and mashed potatoes at that time, I also started adding salt to my foods

within a few days I started feeling much better.
im a couple months post op and i still think about food all the time unfortunately. chips especially 😕

i try and eat little meals and have pretty good restriction so cant eat much but overall i feel good. Ive averaged losing 5lb a week

surgery day i was 251 and now im at 208. My surgery was may 3rd

you’re going to get through this. I suggest checking your blood pressure, if it’s low increase your sodium intake

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
