WHAT does religion have to do with me having surgery??????

Recommended Posts

Let me preface tis by saying I'm not a Christian. I have nothing against Christians, I just happen not to be one. Kinda like I'm not Jewish, Buddhist, or Hindu. I'm just not. ANYWAY.... so I'm talking with a few people that I went to school with back in the day, and I told them I had the sleeve done and you would think I just burned down an orphanage or something. I just defiled God's temple, I should have had more faith in the Lord to guide me through this tough time and not desecrated His temple, I should have talked to my pastor about it and went to God in prayer before making a decision like that, and if God brought me to it He could have brought me through it. Ok, WHAT???? How did I become sinner #1 just by having a surgery that is literally saving my life and helping me to be healthier? There was no way I was getting into a holy war with them over this (oh, there's a lot I COULD have said, but it really wasn't worth it) so I dipped out of the convo and came here to rant about it. Things went so sideways so fast that I'm still confused how we even got there.

So would they say the same thing if you had your gallbladder or appendix removed to save your life? I don’t think so. They are looking at it as cosmetic not as a means to extend your life.

I'm a Christian who tries very hard to live my life as God would want me to. Nothing in my beliefs says this surgery is a sin. I'm sure there are some people of various religions (and no religion) who believe you shouldn't do it, but it's not mainstream. I hope you don't let this bother you too much. My pastor is also my father-in-law and he is very supportive of this decision.

I actually had my gallbladder out back in 97, when I was 4 months pregnant with my son. They knew it, they came and visited me, and never had a bad word to say about it. Maybe they were confusing this with plastic surgery or something, idk. I just know it was the weirdest and most annoying chat I've ever had lol

Thanks :) I try to tune this kind of stuff out. It just really annoyed me and caught me off guard. We've been friends for the better part of 30 years. I wasn't expecting it from them, that's all.

Many people think the surgery is cosmetic. I’m sure that’s what it was. I had a doctor (not a medical doctor but still a doctor) ask me why I just didn’t ask them to just take more out or whatever when I told him beforehand that I worried I wasn’t going to lose all my weight as if he thought they just scoop all the fat out of you or something. I just scratched my head and laughed.

I am sure you will find there are plenty of people who do not have any religious beliefs that think nobody should have weight loss surgery, they think people should have the fortitude and willpower to do it 'the hard way' - Just eat less, just exercise, just say no, just trust the science of calories in calories out.......etc etc

This is why what I do with my body is my business, no one elses. This is why I don't tell people about my personal / medical business.

I was going to say the exact same thing as the others. Do they think having (heart) triple bypass surgery is a sin? Or removing some sort of cancer growth? Or how about tooth extraction? Sheesh. Find some new friends, I say!

You can say the since that everything is God's will, God is the one letting the doctors help us.

As a licensed Christian minister, here would be my response to them.

In Matthew 5:29-30, Jesus said "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

Jesus clearly endorsed the idea that you need self-control by almost any means necessary. He said that if your hand leads you to sin, be willing to cut it off. If your eye continually leads you to sin, be willing to gouge it out. So if your stomach leads you to the sin of gluttony, shouldn't you be equally willing to have it surgically altered to prevent such a sin?

No. I said he was NOT a medical doctor but still a doctor which I typically assume requires a certain level of common sense.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
