Surgery Postponed - Emotional Wreck?

Recommended Posts

So I just got the call today that my surgery was going to have to be postponed a week due to the surgeons availability/schedule. Instead of July 6th, it will be July 14th.

I didn't realize I was so attached to the original date. I'm sitting here silently crying because it got moved a week. When I was speaking to the scheduler on the phone, I literally felt my stomach drop when she said it. Instant depression.

Can one grieve a literal DATE for something like a surgery??? I'm all kinda in my emotions and it feels really weird because of the reason why. For anyone who might have experienced a postponement - is this normal?

Yes it is normal especially if you have already begun your pre op diet. Its another damn week you will have to suffer it. Mine ended up being postponed 2 months and I was rocked to my core. If you are like me you will have wanted this surgery for so long, any set back is awful. After a few days of sulking and moaning, I had a serious talk with myself. We cant change it so we have to lump it, as we say in our end of the UK

I hadn't started it yet, but I am on vacation from work next week and was supposed to start it on Wednesday. So it was REALLY close. Makes me feel better to know I'm not just plain weird or crazy.

a week is nothing, really. Lots of people on here had theirs postponed for months because of COVID. That week should go by quickly...

You're not weird or crazy. Surgery is life altering...tbh it's life before surgery and life after. You had plans in place and were mentally prepared for it to happen on a specific date. Now you have to push back those plans. It's ok to be upset you have worked hard to get a surgery date and now you have to wait a smidge longer. Take a deep breath, cry if you need to, then regroup mentally. You are still having surgery and everything is still fine.

postponements are normal in the healthcare world... This change rapidly, stuff happens in the lives of the surgeons and staff that they need to alter dates. Its not something to get depressed about. Its just 1 extra week and luckily you have not started your pre op diet yet. as someone says an extra week of a pre op diet would suck

I had my surgery postponed in March just two days before it was scheduled (positive Covid test). It was devastating. I've literally never been more depressed in my life than I was during that period. The mental prep for the surgery day was hard and I had finally gotten myself to the point where was 100% ready to go. To have it taken away destroyed me for a while. My new dates is almost here - surgery on Tuesday. I'm once again 100% ready.

I think what you feel is normal. And I think you'll come back strong.

If it weren’t for covid I’d probably have already had it. I just figure I’ve been like this for my whole life, another month won’t kill me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
