Muffinman1119 84 Posted June 17, 2022 Just curious about what experiences you all have had with the bariatric Multivitamins? Do you all have any recommendations for or against any particular ones? The nutritionist I met with recommended the Bariatric Advantage chewable Ultra Solo with Iron.
liveaboard15 1,293 Posted June 17, 2022 This is what i take... You will need to experiment and see what works for you because for many of us Vitamins cause us to be very nauseous. For most its the Iron in the Multivitamin so some may do better with a lower dose of iron in it. Also making sure to have food in your stomach. 2 2 Esi, DreaDaygo, Muffinman1119 and 1 other reacted to this
Muffinman1119 84 Posted June 17, 2022 Thanks for the heads up and advice. I think I'm going to try both Bariatric Advantage and the Bariatric Pal multivitamins and then see what works and what doesn't.

Sarahelmgren 1 Posted June 17, 2022 With the multivitamin do u still need to do the calcium citrate Vitamin D Iron and B12 or is it all in the one I’m having my surgery on the 5th and I’m so confused I’m trying to buy everything and I’m freaking out

My nutritionist told me to take the multivitamin (which should have the Vitamin D, Iron, and B12 in it) and the calcium citrate. However, she told me that if I drank a Protein Shake or drank milk, that I didn't necessarily need 2-3 of the citrate chews, and just to do one. That being said, I'm sure your doctor/nutritionist would be happy to guide you in a more medically focused direction. 1 1 Muffinman1119 and Sarahelmgren reacted to this

I have to take a Multivitamin with Iron (or do the iron apart), and Calcium. For females they may need more calcium that males so idk. For me i am a male and its 2 500mg calciums a day. as for the B12 i was told no if the multivitamin has it in it. 1 1 Muffinman1119 and Sarahelmgren reacted to this
ShoppGirl 5,024 Posted June 18, 2022 (edited) It varies greatly from surgeon to surgeon. It’s really a guessing game what you need before you get your labs. Once you get those they will adjust if necessary. Best thing to do is reach out to your team since they have your medical information and will have the best guess what you will need. My team also recommended Bariatric Advantage. I shopped around though and found Pro Care health multi with Iron because it was cheaper and they were okay with me taking that too. RickM 1,752 Posted June 18, 2022 With a sleeve, you really don't need anything overly special, as we don't have the malabsorption of certain nutrients that you get with the malabsorbing procedures like the RNY or DS; we mostly have to make up for the poor diet that we have during weight loss when we are concentrating on Protein at the expense of the fruits, veggies, grains and legumes that typically flesh out our nutritional profile, so a good quality general multi if usually fine. To that we add some Calcium and Iron as needed (since they need to be take apart from each other) and whatever else we individually may need. With a sleeve, we generally don't need extra B12 (that's more of an RNY thing) but some programs specify it out of convenience, as many just use the same recommendations for their sleeve patients as tehy use for their RNY patients, and then make adjustments later on as labs indicate. Personally, I just use a generic Centrum from costco, add one or two doses of calcium citrate depending upon my other intake (I shoot for 1500-2000mg per day from diet and supplement) plus vit D3, K2 and magnesium citrate (al part of the osteo complex) as I have some history with osteopenia. Overall, the bariatric vits (or double multi vit as some programs recommend instead) are largely overkill for us, but it's generally better to start high and then whittle things down as labs indicate and diet stabilizes. 2 Sarahelmgren and Muffinman1119 reacted to this
Arabesque 7,442 Posted June 18, 2022 (edited) I had sleeve & only had to take a multi Vitamin. I’m menopausal so don’t need the extra Iron as younger women would (not that you need to worry about that either @Muffinman1119) & my blood test showed I had ample iron & iron stores. According to my pre surgery bone scan my bones are rock hard so no additional Calcium either. Plus post surgery I was eating more dairy then I did before. Best advice is to follow what your medical team has advised to begin. Subsequent blood tests will show if you are getting too much of anything. I haven’t taken Vitamins since about month 7 or 8 post surgery. I get all the nutrients, vitamins & minerals I need from what I eat. The exception is vitamin D which I take in winter only. My levels drop a bit because I hibernate. I’ve discovered the brand I buy (BioCeuticals) offers it in a spray now. Single squirt under the tongue. No swallowing tablets. For those who struggle with swallowing meds & nausea, a spray, if you can find it, may be an alternative.
