They gave me a straw at the hospital lol.

Used it then and still do (am 3.5+ years out).

I actually found them very useful in the first couple weeks when i was too sore to sit up and take my sips. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was told no straws but honestly can't remember if it was for recovery or forever. I remember in the hospital the nurse gave me a cup of Water with a straw (which I did not use) but when my surgeon came in to check on me he grabbed it and threw it away while saying "NO STRAWS". 🤷‍♀️

Now, 3 months out I use them all the time. I think the first time was around 2 months post op but I never had a problem with them.

Now that I think about it (I'm 5 weeks out) I drank from a straw when my daughter brought me home a baby smoothie from her job. It was habit, I did it without thinking and had no ill effects. I do avoid them because I get air build up easily.

Side note: how do you add you surgery info onto your profile?

Go to your profile, click my surgery, on the left there will be a menu, click progress...I think I explained it correctly.

I think you can only add it from the website. Not the app. At least not android users

You can from the phone as well and also works for android. You just have to switch the view to desktop version and you can make changes.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
