Tami10 50 Posted June 11, 2022 I'm 7 months out from gastric bypass and I was wondering if anyone has used straws. Some say no and some say yes. I was just wondering if anyone has tried strawsSent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
SleeverSk 635 Posted June 11, 2022 (edited) I did the other day, I am 10 months PO and I didn't have any trouble Edited June 11, 2022 by SleeverSk
catwoman7 11,220 Posted June 11, 2022 I didn't use them the first few months after surgery, but I do now. Although some surgeons (not all) say never, I think it's more of an issue early out.
DaisyAndSunshine 303 Posted June 11, 2022 I still don't get the logic behind "No Straws" Oh well. I started using straws now, 6 months post-Op. Haven't had any issues.
FutureSkyDiver 76 Posted June 11, 2022 I use straws on my various hydration systems for cycling (I’m a long course triathlete). I find that I belch a lot more (and WAY louder) now than I did before. Those straws are bigger bore (think milkshake straws, not regular drink straws) and sometimes they are long (like 2+’ long), which leads to a lot more air in the stomach…thus, the belching. It hurts if I don’t, but honestly, triathletes are pretty gross in general during training and racing (perfectly lovely, hygienic people in real life), so a few extra burps don’t matter to anyone! I find it is helpful to suck the beverage into my mouth, then hold it a few seconds while I force the extra air out my nose, then swallow.
RickM 1,752 Posted June 11, 2022 I used a straw in the hospital after surgery. This seems to be one of those "if it bothers you, don't do it, but if it doesn't, don't worry about it" things Some programs or docs claim they're death and you should never use them ever, while others are "huh? what's wrong with a straw?" I think that the worry is that you will suck up air, or too much air, when trying to get the last bit our of the cup, which might be a problem for some early on, in which case, don't use them, or don't suck up the last bit with the straw. Toesinthewater 31 Posted June 11, 2022 I have always used straws. Thinking is that you swallow more air using a straw. My doc's thinking was that if it doesn't bother you, than use a straw
summerseeker 2,236 Posted June 11, 2022 I have always used straws in cold drinks as I have sensitive teeth. Never had a problem
Spinoza 1,452 Posted June 12, 2022 Have used straws for months with no issues at all. I wasn't told to avoid them
Spinoza 1,452 Posted June 12, 2022 Ahahaha Summerseeker - you and I have both lost exactly 95lbs and both had our surgery last November. How cool is that?
Arabesque 7,414 Posted June 12, 2022 I did from the beginning. Wasn’t told not too. Just found them easier to control my sip with at first for the first month or so. Used them for shakes, Soups, electrolyte drinks but strangely not Water or tea. Use them very rarely now besides the paper straws breakdown before I finish what I’m drinking 😁. ShoppGirl 5,004 Posted June 14, 2022 I use them when I drink smoothies. Idk why but it seems weird to drink them without a straw. I have never had any issues.

fourmonthspreop 510 Posted June 28, 2022 Straws actually helped me stay hydrated in the beginning and still do. I guess I gulp with force so without a straw I get painful gas in my esophagus. It's different for everyone. My program told me not to use them and then I told my doctor they actually help me get Water down and she was like oh cool then keep using them!Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app 1 Arabesque reacted to this
