I'm 7 months out from gastric bypass and I was wondering if anyone has used straws. Some say no and some say yes. I was just wondering if anyone has tried straws

I didn't use them the first few months after surgery, but I do now. Although some surgeons (not all) say never, I think it's more of an issue early out.

I still don't get the logic behind "No Straws"

Oh well. I started using straws now, 6 months post-Op. Haven't had any issues.

I use straws on my various hydration systems for cycling (I’m a long course triathlete). I find that I belch a lot more (and WAY louder) now than I did before. Those straws are bigger bore (think milkshake straws, not regular drink straws) and sometimes they are long (like 2+’ long), which leads to a lot more air in the stomach…thus, the belching. It hurts if I don’t, but honestly, triathletes are pretty gross in general during training and racing (perfectly lovely, hygienic people in real life), so a few extra burps don’t matter to anyone!

I find it is helpful to suck the beverage into my mouth, then hold it a few seconds while I force the extra air out my nose, then swallow.

I used a straw in the hospital after surgery. This seems to be one of those "if it bothers you, don't do it, but if it doesn't, don't worry about it" things Some programs or docs claim they're death and you should never use them ever, while others are "huh? what's wrong with a straw?"

I think that the worry is that you will suck up air, or too much air, when trying to get the last bit our of the cup, which might be a problem for some early on, in which case, don't use them, or don't suck up the last bit with the straw.

Have used straws for months with no issues at all. I wasn't told to avoid them :859_trident:

Ahahaha Summerseeker - you and I have both lost exactly 95lbs and both had our surgery last November. How cool is that?

I did from the beginning. Wasn’t told not too. Just found them easier to control my sip with at first for the first month or so. Used them for shakes, Soups, electrolyte drinks but strangely not Water or tea. Use them very rarely now besides the paper straws breakdown before I finish what I’m drinking 😁.

I use them when I drink smoothies. Idk why but it seems weird to drink them without a straw. I have never had any issues.

Straws actually helped me stay hydrated in the beginning and still do. I guess I gulp with force so without a straw I get painful gas in my esophagus. It's different for everyone. My program told me not to use them and then I told my doctor they actually help me get Water down and she was like oh cool then keep using them!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
