Day 4 of Liquid: Weak and Worried

Recommended Posts

I'm on my fourth day of liquid (mostly liquid - I do get a tiny Protein and veggie meal). The desire to eat (combo of hunger and craving) is difficult. But what's more difficult is most of the day I feel pretty weak and lethargic. I can live with that - it's only two weeks. My bigger concern is - Between the meal and 3 shakes, I'm taking in about 700 cals a day. Will I be feeling this weak after surgery as well? It's one thing to have 2 weeks, but if I'm going to have 2-3 months of this, I want to get mentally prepared for that.

Anyone that had a hard time with the liquid prep because of low-energy, would love to hear how things went post-op.

No not really. depending on your surgeons schedule you will be able to eat soft foods in a few weeks after surgery. and tiny amounts fill you up fast. I was on solids after 2 weeks and it was glorious lol. Because the 2 weeks pre op liquid diet sucked and the post op liquid diet sucked because that point you really cant have any solids until a couple weeks or longer depending on your surgeon. but after the liquids it gets so much better.

probably not. I felt more tired than usual the first month or two post-surgery, but not like I did during the pre-op diet.

I did feel tired for a couple weeks post surgery but I think it had more to do with the surgery recovery itself. After that I was still on pretty low calories but I was fine.

Hello, I’m new to this site and also am on Day 3 of liquid diet. My surgeon limited me to 2.5 Protein Shakes per day and only Water, crystal light, Decaf tea, or any broth in between. So yes, I’m feeling miserable and so hungry I am even craving food I wasn’t too fond of before. I am having the gastric bypass surgery on June 27th. Thanks in advance for any support.

That is a very limiting preop!! Maybe this will encourage - somewhere on day 6 a light went off and it got much easier. The weakness went away and while I'm obviously hungry, I'm not obsessed about it like I was before. Basically, I'm ine now. Hopefully the same happens to you.

I'm surprised to hear that some surgeons recommend mostly liquid for preop prep. This is the first I've heard of that. My preop diet was stuff like eggs or lean meat at Breakfast. A Protein Shake between breakfast and lunch. Meat and veggies (I usually did salad with rich greens and chicken) for lunch or dinner, and another Protein shake at some point. I never felt hungry before surgery. Well, until I stopped eating at midnight the night before surgery. I didn't even have surgery until 5:30pm the next afternoon which was the weirdest time I ever expected to have my surgery done but I was definitely starving then. Lol!

Hahahah. I was surprised my surgeon let me eat anything. I had always read a full liquid was the norm. And here you are eating eggs! I'm so jealous. 😂 But all is well. I ended up losing about 27 lbs over the two weeks. About 6 days in it got so much easier, like a light switch. And I'm very ready to be cut open tomorrow!

Sending my best of the best wishes to you! I hope you'll keep us posted! Super excited for you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
