Diarrhea after drinking protein shake

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am on day 6 after having gastric sleeve and hiatal hernia repair surgery. I can not tolerate the shakes. I’ve tried multiple kinds, non dairy. As soon as I drink it, I have terrible diarrhea, like I have to make a run for it. Idk what to do! I’m not getting enough Protein so I have no energy. I’m trying the Gatorade protein, but I don’t think that’s enough. Any advice?

Hummm. Not sure what would do it in the non dairy ones? Have to tried the premiere Protein clear drinks. They have I think it was 30 grams per serving.

I just thought about it, it could be an artificial sweetener. Malitol is one that seems to cause a lot of issues for some people. I know It’s in sugar free candy but I bet it’s in some of the shakes too.

My surgeon suggested lactaid pills for those having that issue.

other sugar alcohols (in addition to malitol, which seems to be the worst offender) can cause those issues, too. Sugar alcohols all have names that end in -itol (for example, xylitol). So maybe it's some other type of sugar alcohol ? (as in not malitol - but one of the other ones??)

I just checked for malitol and it’s not on the ingredients. But I’m going to try the Premier Protein clear. Thanks!

I just checked it on Amazon And it was 20g in the clear one. Still better than a lot of the Protein waters I tried.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
