Gastric Balloon Biggest challenge so far

Recommended Posts

I had my orbera balloon inserted on May 20th (day of my birthday actually). Went well, luckily I didn't experience any vomiting, thank god I heard that is very common for most people. The most I felt in the first few days was stomach cramping and feeling very weak with no energy. I am on day 11 now. My stomach has been able to tolerate everything ive been eating. This past weekend (memorial weekend) I tried grilled fish and grilled chicken for the first time and it went very well. Very little got me satisfied quickly. I also had a little of mash potatoes and veggies.

Honestly for me the toughest challenge has been mentally. I think most of our society revolves around food and drinking. For me I was in bbqs as it was memorial day weekend and thats basically most of what people are doing and it was rough. I ate chicken and fish as I mentioned but I was craving the red meats and garlic breads, as well as having a drink. As per my research seemed like the month mark is when things go back to somewhat normal where you can eat red meat and drink (moderately) again, so until then I think best to avoid some social settings as everyone around is stuffing their face, drinking, and having fun and your torturing yourself watching. Thats how I felt over the weekend. I know it will change once I I get to that month mark, but I will avoid these for the next 2.5 weeks.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
