How long after gastric sleeve are you at risk of getting Dumping Syndrome ?

Recommended Posts

Gastric sleeve patients don't usually get dumping syndrome, though it is not impossible. I am 7 years out and have never had dumping.

I was told dumping for the sleeve was getting the feeling like something stuck in my chest. I’ve had it a couple of times along with feeling nausea and even throwing up if I eat too much or something with too much sugar. Once that happens I don’t eat those foods again.

That tightness isn’t dumping, that’s your restriction. With dumping you experience cold sweats, heart palpitations, diarrhoea &/or vomiting, dizziness. It can last for hours. You’ll really know when you experience it.

Sometimes when your restriction kicks in you can get the foamies but it’s more spitting up saliva & maybe regurgitating that last little bit you ate not vomiting everything you ate per se. Dumping occurs by eating something high sugar or high fat. Your restriction & foamies usually occurs not because of eating a specific food type but because you ate too much, too fast or something too dry or coarse. As I said in my earlier post it usually passes quickly after you bring up that last bite that caused the problem.

Dumping is more common with a bypass & it isn’t as common with a gastric sleeve.

You’re only a couple of months out so your tummy could still be pretty sensitive which resulted in vomiting. I used to get nauseous & vomit quite often in the morning … usually after taking my multi Vitamin. ☹️

I had the gastric sleeve a little over a month ago, I experienced dumping according to my nutritionist, it happened after I ate a small scoop of vanilla ice cream at my daughter's birthday party. But it was nothing like it's been described to me in the past or on forums etc. I just got super tired and took a 3 hr nap when I got home. I'm very careful not to eat sugar now, or if I'm going to eat it I'll eat a very small portion, like 1 jelly bean 😂. Besides, since surgery most sugary things are wayyyy too sweet now anyway. Dumping can present differently in sleeve patients than it does in bypass patients if at all. I just happen to be one of the luck ones.

I am 3 mos out and had my final nutritionist visit last week. Because I am healed and tolerating the surgery well, she has cleared me (more or less) for juice, soda, alcohol, coffee, etc. - all in MODERATION. I have had small portions of cake, cheesecake, pie, cobbler and candy and have not experienced dumping syndrome. I HAVE had the foamies when eating something either too bulky or taking one or two bites too many. I generally stay between 900-1100 calories per day. I am 62, 50 lbs down and still losing 1-2 lbs per week.

EDIT: By "clear", I mean I made her aware that I had consumed this items without any negative consequences and we discussed that I should have no problems if I exercise moderation.

Congratulations! I'm 8 months out and have only lost 41 lbs. I'm 61. You are doing great! My doctor cleared me on eating everything at 6 weeks out. It's so weird that so many doctor's have such different aftercare directions. I continue to try and eat about 800-1000 calories a day. I have never "dumped" even after eating sweets. I was losing about 5 lbs per month but I've been on a stall for 2 months now. A little frustrating.

I don't know if it is dumping, but I get sick after eating ice cream about half the time to the point where I do not want to eat it at all. About 10 minutes after eating it I get light headed, dizzy and the cold sweats. I usually end up vomiting it up

That’s dumping so you are one of the unusual sleevers who do dump. It will be from the sugar in the ice cream. Some sleevers have said in time they have been able to tolerate small amounts like a spoon of ice cream without experience dumping but that might just be them.

On occasions if I use too much milk with my rolled oats, I can get a few dumping like symptoms (cold sweats, weak feeling in my tummy, general feeling of blah) anywhere up to 30 minutes later. I believe it’s because the extra milk flushes the oats (starch) through my digestive system more quickly & therefore dumps it in my intestines. It’s a fine balance. If it happened a couple of hours after I ate I’d say it was hypoglycaemia. It also tends to happen if I have Breakfast too early.

Interesting. I am not going to give in though. I am still going to try to have ice cream from time to time because I just like a guilty pleasure every now and then. I will beat the dumping. I will just start with smaller portions and go until I know where the point is where it bothers me. Thanks.

Oh my! That is frustrating! My scale has stood still for 3 days, so I suspect that I am now in a stall as well!

Maybe try frozen yogurt instead of ice cream? Or a sugar free brand.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
