Hey everybody, I am 5 days post op and my incision sites are itching like crazy. I still have my staples - they get removed on the 25th- my question is what can I do about the itching? I can't use lotions or creams but I'm thinking maybe bio oil? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I didn’t have staples so I didn’t have the same restrictions. I would give a quick call to your surgeons office and ask about the bio oil or an ointment such as Aquaphor healing ointment (that’s what I was told to use on my incisions but again I didn’t have staples so that may not be okay for your situation).

I agree - I'd check with your clinic before doing anything. I suspect bio oil would might cause the same potential issues as lotions or creams would.

I got really itchy after one of my plastic surgeries - reactions to the adhesive or tape they used. They put me on oral prednisone for a few days, so maybe they could do something like that. But I'd call your clinic before doing anything.

staples? I didnt have stables. They used surgical glue which faded away after about a month. but mine were still a little itchy. i used some neosporin pain+itch relief. Maybe that can work for you?

I had staples for 7 days. I could do literally nothing for the itch, not allowed to use any cream, oil, etc. I just itched around the clear bandage to ease my mind.

The itching means the incisions are healing. It sucks, there's not much you can do, maybe ask about benadryl, but one thing that can make it worse, is taking a hot shower. Heat activates the nerves to fire. Nerves firing mean big time itching. So if you are taking hot showers, maybe try to turn the AC a bit warmer before your shower and take a cooler shower and see if that helps until you're healed.

Best wishes!

Thanks everyone! My surg team says I can't use anything topical, but they are having me try some oral steroids. Fingers crossed it will work

yes - that's what they gave me after my plastic surgery (oral steroids - in my case, prednisone - you probably have the same. You take them for 10 days, if I remember correctly...).

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
