How often do you weigh yourself after WLS?

Recommended Posts

I had an RNY a week ago. At this point I am scared to weigh myself for fear of retaining Fluid. Not sure when to weigh myself. Every month, week or day? In previous attempts with weight loss programs I found the weekly weigh in daunting due to the fact that I was a slow lose most people weigh themselves.

How often do you weigh in?

More times than I’d like to admit lol

I’m 3 months out my surgeon recommends every 2 weeks, then at a year monthly weigh ins.

I weighed myself 9 days after surgery because my Drs appt was on that day by video conference and I knew my Dr would ask. I lost 14 lbs so I was pleased with that. I told myself Id only weigh once per week but I weighed myself today which was 3 days since I last weighed and I had not lost anything so it bummed me out. So Im going to try to stick to the once per week weigh in or longer if I can do it.

I weigh myself every 3 months at my follow-up with my surgeon. But, that is due to my therapist and nutritionist highly recommending it for me. I have a long history of becoming way too obsessed with the scale, which would lead me to restrict, then binge/restrict, then binge/purge, then finally binge-eating all together. It's just been my downhill spiral for forever. Now I have finally been learning to pay attention to my health and how I feel with energy, health, and just overall mental health. It's been a relief to not weight myself so much. However, that is not a rule for all. For me it was highly recommended by my team. But, for others they need to weigh more often.

I am wanting to avoid that bummed out feeling too. I know that I will be weighed when I see my surgeon next Wednesday. Hope that will not be disappointed.

It is horrid when the scales seems to rule our lives. Health is the reason why I started on this journey. Here's to health for the both of us River Moon. :)

the first couple of years I weighed myself almost every day, but the (normal) fluctuations were getting to my head, so since then I've only weighed myself once a week.

Before my surgery I dreaded getting on the scale. After my surgery I weighed myself every day to see what I had lost. When I stopped losing, I stopped looking. Some of the weight came back about 5 years out when I stopped exercising because I had trouble with my knees.

Then I became very stable and my weight just stayed the same for about 15 years. I relaxed about it and just got weighed whenever I went to the doctor's office. I retired 2 years ago and moved back to where I grew up. I reconnected with old friends and because of Covid, we'd meet outside and go for walks. The change in my lifestyle from extremely sedentary to moderately active made the weight I had gained back drop off again. Now I weigh myself about once a month.

During the first couple years, I weighed at monthly follow-ups. This was less by choice as I couldn't fit on home scales. When I got to where I could weigh on a home scale, I did that every time I saw the scale for a couple weeks because of the novelty, then went back to only at monthly follow-ups.

When the monthly follow-ups ended I only weighed at my annual physicals.

Good luck,

Tek

I still weigh myself most days. I'm almost exactly 6 months post sleeve. I expect when the weight loss slows down and I can finally trust I'm not going to suddenly put it all back on again I'll do it less often!

After surgery, wait 2-3 weeks to weigh - I know it’s tempting, but the accumulation of fluids in tissues can freak you out. After that, I weighed once a week and have continued that routine (I’m almost 2 years out).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
