Post op ketamine infusions

Recommended Posts

This post may be touchy for some people. But we will try. I do ketamine infusions periodically for depression. My ketamine physician said to wait until cleared on 5/16/22 and then we could resume once a month infusions. My next appt is set for 5/23. Anyone have any feedback on resuming this type of treatment post weight loss surgery? It’s fairly uncommon treatment so maybe not but I thought I’d try for some feedback :)

I had only heard of this on passing so I googled it. It says it can cause “stomach problems” as a side effect. Because of this I would definitely ask the surgeons opinion about when it’s okay to continue treatments. And maybe research a little further to figure out what “stomach problems” they are speaking of and how surgery will impact them.

I might suggest the provider who prescribes the ketamine have a discussion with your bariatric surgeon. A good friend of mine has done ketamine nasal spray for years, but he has also been told not to do bariatric surgery due to other medications he's on.

If you can't get the two MDs to talk (this can be hard, I found out), you could ask your bariatric center's NP or PA or send an email to your surgeon.

I hope you get a good answer!

I thought about ketamine for depression. Was it working for you? What is the issue with using it after bariatric surgery?

Best decision I ever made. I was resistant to most anti depressants and nothing was working so I tried it. My mood is significantly improved. Post bypass I think they just want to be sure the body is healed enough to handle an infusion. The idea of it now makes me somewhat nervous—idk if rerouted guts has any impact on the infusion or not.

I know that most drugs hit me harder than they used to as does alcohol so maybe that's it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
