August surgery buddies!

Gambapentin will mess you up! I was prescribed it for help treating a nerve injury, and it completely ruined me to be able to drive. I was so glad to get off that stuff! So great to hear you are feeling so much better and doing all that walking! Congratulations!!!
Yes, so true! I thought it would help me sleep one night but it just ended up making me loopy and dizzy that whole next day. I'll stick to my liquid Tylenol.

Thanks guys! Your answers make me feel better. I think I’ll be able to do it. Driving was my biggest worry. Because of the amount of traffic going home can sometimes take over an hour.

I had my surgery on the 9th, and I went back to work today.

My doctor recommended that I take at least two weeks off, and I have a doctor's note for four weeks, but I'm a teacher and this week is the only time we have to prepare before school starts next week. So I went today (at 9, thankfully not at eight) and I ended up staying until 3:45 or the same as everyone else.

I was a bit nauseous after lunch (very thin oatmeal) and I had to stand up sometimes during our meetings because I was uncomfortable, plus I was pretty tired when I came home, but in all I'm doing much better than I anticipated. Sure, it would have been nice to have another week to heal, but it would be more stressful for me in the long run to turn up next week unprepared.

This exactly my worry. Luckily the kids won’t be back yet for that first week. That’s when it really gets exhausting. Lol.

Yes! I had mine on Monday, Aug 8th and I was back working remotely from home by Friday. By 3pm I was really tired, but I feel like I have much more energy this week.

I am Wednesday, hoping Monday morning I am good to work remote. This give me hope!

August buddies!!! So I had a ZOOM - group education appointment about our post-op diet and I am crying inside that I won't be able to eat regular food until November!

Oh my goodness! November?! Ugh. I hope its not so far ahead for me. I have a wedding at the end of October. I want to at least be eating a little normally.

My date is similar, and I know that I am not going to be able to do pureed meats... so Protein Shakes it is. Luckily I found a company with some really different flavors.

What company are you using?

1st Phorm, the Meal Replacement shakes. I also use their collagen & Harmony for hormone balance and have been loving it. One of my friends turned me onto them, and I have liked everything I try.

I'm a teacher too and I totally get what you are saying about it being more stressful to take more time off vs going into work!

Most likely you will feel better and get stronger every day. I was winded after just getting dressed last week, and I'm still a bit winded going up the stairs today, but I'm still heaps better than I was two days ago. So, you may well be perfectly up to going to work in a week's time. If not, is there no way you can get more time off?

I'm a teacher so I have to be there when school starts. I hope I get stronger every day, but if not I can have my teaching assistants do a fair amount of work for me for a couple weeks. I think I may have overestimated my recovery rate, but this was the earliest I could get the surgery done, so 2 weeks will have to do!

I've got my bag packed, I've paid the hospital bill. All I've gotta do is drive to Spokane (6 hours away) and get checked in on the 18th. I finally found peace with the pre-op liquid diet, but I am seriously looking forward to full liquids once the surgery is over! We're starting at a gorgeous little Air BnB during the surgery stay and a couple days after before making the long drive home. Anyone else have to travel far for their surgery and appointments?

We are heading to the hotel now. It’s not that far, about an hour - but I didn’t want the stress of the traffic and run the risk of being late (or needlessly stressed).

My life saver has been sugarfree Jello. If i didnt have that i dont think i could make it through this liquid diet.

I struggle with sf Jello and popcicles… the simply delish jello is ok (I can eat it… well a little of it) but in general… I look like a cat with a hair-ball trying to eat eat sf stuff.

Are there brands that are better than others?

Honestly, I usually cannot taste the difference between regular and sugar free foods. I just use Jell-o brand of the premade stuff and if im making it myself I use Royal brand because it is cheaper. Some people just don't like jello. My mother wouldn't eat it to save her life.

I like Jello … but the artificial sweeteners kill me. First the taste, then digestively.

I wish I could find something without aspartame. Erythritol doesn’t seem to bother me as much - but I’m not finding popcicles made with that. The simply delish is the best of the jellos I have found - but pricy. I have some of their pudding to try - when I’m allowed to have it.

Once I’m allowed purred fruits, I will make some Protein fruit popcicles and Gelatin “jello” - but that’s not until week 2 for me.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
