August surgery buddies!

Hey everyone! I’m a week post op! I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because the nursing staff wasn’t sure what I was supposed to be doing. Doing pretty well but I’m ready to move out of the liquid stage. I was up 11 pounds from my pre-surgery weight when I got home and still three pounds over today. I’m hoping I can have some puréed food soon. I’m over Protein shakes!

It's graet to hear you had a successful surgery! Congrats :D Yeah, the clear liquid stage is difficult. I know I'm ready for full liquids again!

Hi there my surgery date is scheduled for August 22nd . I plan on taking 5 weeks off of work.

Wow 5 weeks is awesome! Good for you. Sadly I can’t take that kind of time off so I’m just hoping my body works with me and allows me to push through. I’ll be back at work on the 27th. Exactly 1 week later. Do you have a pre-op?

i second @heartofmercury’s sentiment. Today I begin liquids. I just know days 1-3 are going to be hard because I’ll likely get a headache from all the sugar and bad stuff leaving my system. Anyone else experience headaches?

I've had a small persistent headache I believe due to no caffeine. I thought I was being smart and using the Premiere cafe latte Protein Shake, but then learned it has caffeine! The clear liquid stage is kickin' my hiney, but I'm hanging in there. You can do it too!

Thanks! Surgery was Tuesday, was released yesterday afternoon. No real issues with walking, they were actually really surprised with how I was getting around so well. Right now I'm dealing with a lot of nausea and trouble getting in my Water. I've been so exhausted that I'm having trouble waking up to get some oz in. I feel like my sips (no matter how small) are giving me chest pains. The nurses kept telling me my sips were to big but id take small enough sips just to wet my mouth and it would still cause me sharp pains in my chest. I woke up this morning with both hands and forearms pretty swollen. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I haven't taken any of the pain medication they prescribed me. I feel like that will only make me more tired and that much harder to get my Water intake in.

How are things going for you now? Are you feeling any better? I have been traveling for several days and not able to see the posts. I hope you are doing okay! I had my 2 week pre-op appt and on Clear Liquids now - I'm ready to get this done. I sure hope you're feeling better!!

I'm on day 10 of 21 days of liver shrinking diet. Last night I started dreaming about food. This is pure savagery. Can't they just put me in an induced coma and hook me up to a drip? Sigh.

YES! I told my family today that I can't go to the grocery store any more for them until I get through this. It is sooo weird, I never dream about food and yet, I can't stop thinking about the taste of grilled food and spices. It's driving me a little nutso! I'll be so relieved when I can have full liquids again! Homemade chicken broth is a life saver though, I will admit that!

I can’t believe the day is getting so close. It feels like yesterday that my doctor first suggested the surgery and here 7 months later and I start my two weeks of liver-shrinking diet on Friday. Sucks that my hubby’s birthday falls two days before surgery, but I’m confident that I can do this.
So lucky to have him on board with me, he’s been looking up foods I can eat if we go out during the diet lol “I know us, we’re not going to eat at home every night.” His words 🤣

I’ve had a few nervous freak outs and I’m sure the nerves will only get worse as it gets closer, but I’m all in and so looking forward to the other side.

Since hubby was diagnosed with diabetes in May, we’ve been really careful about what we eat and I’ve already lost around 35lbs, so I know that with the surgery, it will only get easier (though by no means do I consider this the easy way)!

Hi there! My surgery (gastric sleeve) date is August 22nd. I'm 5'7" and haven't stepped on a scale in 6 months, but judging by how my clothes fit compared to the last time I did, I'm probably around 390 pounds. The next 2 weeks has me on Protein Shakes + a small meal a day. Today I had my blood drawn. Phone consult with the anesthesiologist is Friday. I think tomorrow or Wednesday is also my pre-op consult with my surgeon.

I have severe arthritis in my knees after 4 decades of chronically dislocating knees, and with the weight on top of that, I'm in so much pain and can barely move. Pre-diabetic from a family with diabetes. High blood pressure. Depression. I really look forward to less pain and more mobility. I used to be such an athletic person, but I'd settle for being able to walk without wincing even with a cane. I know it's not going to be an easy road, but neither is living like this. I just want it to be a longer and healthier road....

Oh no! Are/were the spasms painful? I haven’t heard of that but I can easily imagine that happening. Especially considering that it mist feels like you just over did an ab exercise when you get out of surgery. I hope they were able to help you with that.

Hey everyone! My surgery was August 4th so I’m 5 days post op today. I’m doing pretty good! I was outpatient at Blossom in Vegas. I was one of the lucky ones with virtually zero pain - just some mild discomfort. I don’t know if that was because I was diligent with walking, having my husband use the massage gun on my back and/or using my massage/vibrating heating pad (has these little parts that go over your shoulders and covers the whole back - feels amazing).

While I had no pain I have definitely been nauseas. So bad after taking pills I stopped all of them the night of surgery, but now live with a constant 2/3 out of 10. I’m sure it’ll go away.. just frustrating. I have 2 weeks off work so I’m just taking it easy.

Any other surgery buddies? How are you doing??

After my VSG, I had to do clear liquids for about a week or so and then two weeks of regular liquids until my follow up with my doctor. After that appointment they released me to move on to very soft, puréed foods. I found the puréed stage difficult because I wasn’t sure what to make! I watched lots of YouTube videos about making foods in different stages. And trying to get a lot of Protein was very difficult (still is for me!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
