Recent Injury Rant

I am 8 weeks post op. I was sleeved on 3/1/22 and everything has been going great until last weekend when I tripped on the stairs and sliced my big toe open. Now I’m sitting around the house with a bandaged toe and a boot for outside. I’m so bummed because I had just gotten into a good workout routine. Although I am still hitting my Protein and Water goals I noticed right away that I was consuming more calories. I feel bloated and just all around blah. I convinced myself yesterday that this is where my weight loss stops and I just need to find happiness in where I am at now. My starting weight was 266 and I now weigh 222.6 lbs. All in my feels today….

Aw that's such bad luck to hit a totally unrelated setback when you were doing so well! You're absolutely entitled to a bit of a wallow. You know this isn't the end though, just a blip. Upper body workouts for the next couple of weeks? I hope you recover really soon. :91_thumbsup:

This doesn’t have to be an end to your weight loss. I’m sorry that happened. That reminds me of when I was losing weight the natural way during COVID and I kept getting blisters or thigh chafing, etc causing setbacks in my routine. They suck but they are only temporary.

Lemons ? So let’s make lemonade? Turn on the musics and dance. Even if sitting down. Just do it where it’s safe and it does not hurt. There are many routines you can do with the help of a sturdy chair. It won’t be long - you will bounce back. I just started and hurt my back with Zumba. I’m ok now and will try something else until I’m string enough.

I'm sorry that happened! It's so frustrating, I know. I had just started exercising and met with a trainer and immediately got biceps tendinitis and only now months later am I able to do upper body work again. But, like others said, you can do other forms of exercise for now, and your toe will heal. The positive thing is that you WANT to work out!

On a side note, you will still lose weight even if you don't exercise since you just had surgery. I barely exercised for the first 6 months or so after surgery, and I still lost a ton of weight. Exercise is very important for general health and for maintaining weight loss, but really, losing weight is all about eating better. You can't outrun a bad diet!

Lowe! I bet that is really painful. So sorry. I sliced a big chunk off my thumb last year. Couldn’t believe how such a small thing like not being able to use such a tiny part of me limited me in doing just about everything. So frustrating.

But don’t give up. Yes, try upper body exercise as others have suggested. Remember all your eating strategies. Eat slowly. Eat only until you’ve enough not full - do you need that next bite or just want it. Stick to your portion sizes recommendations & your eating plan. Etc. Nothing has changed except some of your mobility temporarily. I rarely exercised & I lost all my weight. So being limited in your activity is not going to stop your weight loss. Remember why you’re doing this. Stay the course & stay positive.

Hope you heal well.

honestly, weight loss is about 90% food and only 10% exercise. I know WLS patients who lost a ton of weight even without exercise. That said, exercise is great for your overall health and people should do it - but an injury that causes a temporary pause in your routine is not going to be the end of your weight loss.

also, you could be in a stall - they're very common. Just stick to your program and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks.

and no, I doubt "this is it" as long as you're adhering to your program. Most of us lose for a year - if not more (20 months for me - but I started out much heavier than you, so I had a lot more to lose)

Thank you so much for your kind words! The mental part of this journey is way harder than I anticipated. I truly appreciate the suggestions and encouragement.

Wow, you lost 44 pounds in 8 weeks! I’ve only lost 7.6 pounds since my surgery two weeks ago. I can’t even imagine losing that much so fast. How often were you exercising? What type of exercise?

P.S. Sorry about your injury. Fingers crossed for quick healing.

My surgeons office encouraged exercising as soon as possible so I started walking one week post op. My weight at surgery was 257 so it’s really a 35 pound lost since surgery and 9 lbs lost prior to surgery. I try to walk at least three days a week but I do walk a ton at work as well. I think also the diet plan seems to be a lot stricter then others. I’m almost 9 weeks post op and I’m still only doing soft and chopped foods, only cooked veggies and no fruit. 7.6 pounds is amazing in two weeks!

I have been walking about every other day since my surgery. I started at 10 minutes and now I’m up to 25 minutes. I graduate to PURÉED foods on Tuesday. Do you have any suggestions? Things that didn’t make you sick and were satisfying?

Sounds like you walk more then me, that’s great. I hated the puréed stage but I will tell you that refried Beans and black beans became my best friend. I love anything remotely related to Mexican food. So I would mash my black beans down and add a little shredded cheese and plain Greek yogurt to replace sour cream. That was my go to meal. I might actually try some again this week but just just add a little chicken. I also tried egg salad but made it with low fat ranch dressing instead of mayo.

YESSSS, refried beans are at the top of my list! I love Mexican food too. I can’t wait to have a chicken enchilada when I get to regular foods.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
