HELP - Finding a plan that will cover WLS in Texas

Recommended Posts

Help. Me.

I currently have insurance through my husband's work but they have wls specifically excluded so I am looking to change my insurance when open enrollment comes up again. I have been trying to research what insurance companies and plans cover wls and have been spiraling down a black hole since. EVERY plan I have seen says that wls is excluded. I called BCBSTX and the lady said that all of their plans cover it if it is medically necessary but all the their plans online show it under exclusions. 🤦‍♀️

So I guess I am trying to find out, if you live in Texas, what insurance company and plan did you use to get an approval for wls? Or do you know of any resource that would have that information?

Thank y'all so much!!

Unfortunately you will not find a plan that will cover it in Texas thru the affordable care act (obama care) I have done lots of research on this specifically because here in Florida its also excluded... These are the states where its covered. Your option would be to move to one of these states temporarily, Establish residency, get healthcare, get your surgery and leave. If you notice most southern states are excluded because people in southern states tend to be overweight when compared to northern states. (according to multiple articles i read about bariatric surgery. This is my backup if i end up needing a revision is to move. South Dakota seems to be the easiest from the research i did.

I was told by BMI of Texas that the marketpalce plans do not cover it but some individual plans through the insurance companies directly do. They couldn't tell me which plans though

I hope you are able to find your answer. I just had my surgery on the 18th and it cost me $18,000 which really sucked lol.

many people can't afford to do it in the US and go to Mexico. I know many people who have done this, but you have to decide if that's right for you. There are always tradeoffs. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
