Possible stricture and the dressed foamies

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all.

I got gastric bypass surgery on 3/29 and for the first two weeks I thought everything was going well. I was meeting my goals, losing weight, etc. But then the third week I transitioned to soft foods and it all went downhill.

So I decided to eat some swiss cheese with some bologna bits and that was fine! Ate some goldfish as well and was feeling good. I attempted to sneak a French fry or two the following night and I felt like the food was just stuck in my stomach. I felgike every breathe I took I needed to burp but if I would try to, it'd just be foam/mucus. Eventually, I threw up.

I had felt this way before occasionally during the pureed phase but just chalked it up to healing from the surgery. Eventually it got to the point where the only thing I could tolerate was my Protein Shakes. I called my clinic and they advised me to go to the ER. After about 12 hours and a wildly uncomfortable cat scan, they determined I had either inflammation or a stricture and said they'd do an endoscopy soon, but sent me home. Also told me to continue liquids.

I called my clinic again today because I haven't heard anything about my endoscopy and now my Protein shakes are hard to get down. I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday so they told me to wait until then.

I don't know what to do. It's so uncomfortable and I dread having to consume anything...but I know I need to. Advice? Thoughts? Words of encouragement?

1) probably a stricture. Once they get it cleared, you'll be fine

2) you shouldn't be progressing on your diet like that. Goldfish crackers and French fries during week 3 is on no one's plan. You'll eventually be able to eat stuff like that again (although in controlled amounts), but right now you should be focusing on following your plan. You don't want to sabotage everything when you're right out of the gate. This will all work as long as you follow the plan. Don't be one of those people who never loses very much weight - or worse, gains it all back. You've been through too much for that.

So crackers are on my three week plan and digested ok! I made a justification on the french fries because they're soft, but you're probably right.

I'm just frustrated because my doctor doesn't want to seem to schedule anything, meanwhile I literally can't eat or drink anything. I see her Thursday but it just sucks in the time being.

Maybe go back to the ER or even a different ER if the first didn't want to do an endoscopy and your surgeon doesn't want to do one either. If you can't get Water down, that's a BIG problem!

Hey girl I would roll things back to liquid. Go pick up a fairlife milk fat free it has your Protein and your Fluid ounce in it and is very light this might hold down the fort til the dr gets in there

Hey we are Bariatric twins! My surgery was on 3/29 too! Having some of the same issues, hope you take care of the stricture! Yeah, if I try something that upsets my stomach, its back to the shakes, it has become almost a comfort food now, since I also kinda hate eating. I have been assured by the helpful people on this website, and my doctor that by three months things will be much better and eating will be less burdensome. Its a journey..

Hey there! I'm actually writing this from the hospital. I started to barely be able to consume Water and passed out. Now just waiting on an endoscopy so that they can puff open my stricture. It's been hell, and I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't regretting this whole thing.

Wow, so sorry to hear that!! I hope you feel better soon, sounds like your doctors are taking good care of you. I understand the regret, but look to the future, buying new smaller clothes, being healthier overall. Take care!

Well hopefully they will fix you right up at the hospital and this will all be a blip on the radar very soon. Feel better.

My surgery was 3/10/22, had the same issue. My surgeon performed an endoscopy with a dilation. He inserted a small balloon and gentle open a specific area that was causing that same problem. I’m now able to eat some solid foods. Yay!!

I'm glad to hear you got it fixed up. How long did it take for your surgeon to fix? It's been about two weeks for me and it just sucks. Even now in the hospital, they keep pushing back the date.

Also, afterwards did you have to keep doing liquid or could you do pureed?

That very day I made chicken wings, ate 3 pieces no skin and very little dipping sauce but so satisfying. Definitely let your surgeon know what’s going on, it’s a simple fix if that’s what’s is happening. I haven’t had any issues since I had the egd with dialation on 4/27/2022. Wish you the best, don’t loss hope🥰

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
