Considering this procedure

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I I have done some research and am considering this to be my best option. I am pre op and have my very first appointment with a Bariatric Surgeon on 4/25.

I am currently 278 pounds and am 5 ft tall with a BMI over 50. I’m 31 and suffer from liver disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, gastroparesis, angina/chest pain, have had a TIA, limited mobility, sleep apnea, type II diabetes and most recently diagnosed with multiple pulmonary embolisms.

I am slowly killing myself and I am done. I am considering other options, but feel with my BMI and myriad of co morbidities, that this is my best option.

Hi Carrielee,

Seeing a bariatric surgeon and getting into a pre-surgical program has been life-changing for me. I am scheduled for a SADI-DS procedure on May 5. I have high BP requiring multiple medications, am nearly a diabetic, and am tired of yo-yo dieting. I also don't want dumping syndrome, which can happen after the traditional gastric bypass.

Meanwhile, after seeing the dietician and therapist and getting on a plan, I have lost 48 pounds so far during my preop. My starting weight was 330 lb, now 281.5 lb. My pants size has gone from a 28W to a 22W.

My advice is to find a bariatric surgeon you trust. Work with the dietician and therapist. You will lose weight. The surgery becomes another tool to make it more effective.

Good Luck!

Thank you for sharing your experiences thus far. This has been something I’ve been considering for nearly a year and finally am ready to take the steps.

What is the BMI requirement for duodenal switch? My BMI is 44, but I have seen in the internet where it has to be 50 or more?

The BMI is a range. I was 44-49.9 range when my surgeon suggested the SADI. I have high blood pressure and am a pre-diabetic. My insurance approved the procedure without any difficulty.

I did a lot of research as well & decided on the DS Sadi since it has a better long term weight loss success rate than the Sleeve. My surgery is on May 5th, so I’m currently on day 8 of my preop. My BMI is currently at 40 since I have lost some weight! My insurance thankfully approved it. 🙏 I’m getting nervous but excited.

DeMarie, we have the same surgery date!

I'm excited surgery day is so close. I'm ready to have it done!

How are you doing on your pre-op diet? I'm struggling to drink *another* Protein Shake. I know I am still a month away from food again, but I'm emotionally ready to have non-liquids!

Kathleen congratulations on your surgery date! Since both of our surgeries were a couple of days ago I hope we both have a fast recovery! Overall my surgery went excellent, the only really big issue I had was back pain, they said it was from the gas that was used during surgery & was told walking would help. I ended up walking A LOT & thank goodness I did because I woke up this morning with no more back pain. Now Im just working on getting in fluids. How did your surgery go?

DeMarie, so glad your surgery went well!! Getting those laps in helps move the gas in the abdomen and relieve the referred pain. Great job!

I feel blessed to have had no nausea and only mild pain near my incision sites. I'm tolerating my fluids well. I unfortunately lost a little more blood during the surgery than expected. So I'm still in the hospital as they monitor my blood counts. Walking the hallways at the hospital unit takes alot of energy out of me, but I get a lap in then back to my room to nap. I should be discharged tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to recovering completely. But am revising my estimated return to work. I was thinking I'd be off 2-3 weeks. Now I may take the whole 6 weeks covered by FMLA.

I know I'm a bit late for this forum, but I was wondering did anyone experience dumping syndrome with this surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
